Well, a lot of the so called minimal, electro and "tech-house" artists nowadays have it made. All they have to do is get on fruity loops, make a bunch of dings, dangs, bleeps bloops and burps (it doesn't really matter where the song is going) and some moron out there is going to like it.
At least it's a good way to make some extra cash if you need it.
I would say that getting on your way to making a "quality" production requires some experimenting until you develop a niche for what you're after - it doesn't just happen overnight. Don't think you need to meet a specific formula. Get inspired by a variety of different sounds and genres and incorporate them into what you're doing as you see fit. That's what made a lot of the older trance tracks so good, was the fact that they didn't follow so many predictable rules that we have today for the different styles.
And if you find that you're lacking a little money, produce a little cheese and maybe it'll go over. Nothing wrong with enjoying a nice cheesy tune ever once in a while.
