Rudee saves our Sunday morning @ The Basement

Last Sunday, Leap and Johnny wanted to check out Loco @ The Basement, and then afterwards head over to Cozo after to meet up with Northern Girl, who was down visiting from the north (great seeing you gal!)

oh--before I forget: On the way down, Matt Brennan popped in his latest mix CD (hoping to see this guy on some sort of Toronto Circuit spinning sometime soon) and the opening track totally rocked my socks. I found out later it was Follow Me - The Junkies take 3 remix. Love the track--can't wait to hear it in the club! Grab a listen here: Listen on beatport

Getting into The Basement around 6 am, the place is packed--a punk crowd mixed in with typical house heads. It's good to see the place growing. The previous night had hosted a drum and bass party, which explained the punk groups still milling around soaking up the house beats. It was cool to do some people watching with such different groups intermingling.

The house beats, on the other hand, were _horrible_. Ok, not the tracks themselves (although they didn't suit the mood or time of day, for my liking)...but specifically the mixing was TERRIBLE. NorthenGirl showed up to check the place out with a few friends, and most of us were decidedly turned off. The beat matching was terrible--train wreck after train wreck. At first, I thought I had heard wrong--but by the third or fourth time, I knew the DJ was taking us into a hell hole of audio massacre. Poor guy just wasn't having an 'on' day, hopefully next time will be better. Will I give the guy a second chance? Of course, but wow....

Apparently the DJ was a guy named Ping, currently spinning at Film lounge on a regular basis. I know everyone has off days...but wow! Luckily, another DJ stepped up to the decks, whispered something to Ping, and shook his hand. Dismissed, Ping released the decks and ceasing his onslaught. Enter DJ Rudee.

With a few quick movements, the dying track was put to rest, and a new track full of bass and energy slammed through the sound system, and instantly the crowd was revived. Schmucky even went up to the DJ booth and started clapping. While Ping nearly single handedly emptied The Basement, Rudee came back and filled it back up again--bringing the energy back into the club.

I can't stress how important an opening DJ's set is for a club like Cozo or The Basement--people are coming in (mostly) after a night of partying and need some serious tunes to pick them up and re-energize them. Having a poor set with next to horrible mixing is instant death for any wanna-keep-going partier. Thankfully the powers that be saw the damage being done and rectified it quickly.

That was my first time really paying attention to Rudee, and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the set. I see he has a set hosted on HouseAddict.com's booth for people to listen to this month. I got Matt to request Ilo's "Rapture," but he didn't have the track with him (and what is this...a wedding??). Paranoid Jack was up next, and we loved the dark twisted stuff he was throwing down. I'm hyped to be able to hear sets by this guy, as he was just finishing up his cozo stuff as I was getting into the scene, and everyone speaks with such high regard to his production and mixing skills.

I went up and thanked Rudee after he came off the decks for saving our Sunday morning--very cool guy. I asked him if they'd be open for Family Day; yup! 5am - 5pm. So it might be another Basement/zone day. He also told me that he read about all the confusion about the name online, and wanted to set that straight...the event is called "5am Sundays @ The Basement"

I'm looking forward to hearing MC Flipside and Mute & Laki there...they're on the roster, but I haven't heard any specific set times or dates yet...

Between Rudee, Paranoid Jack and Junkie's Follow Me take 3 edit... this has been a very sic week so far. The only thing that would make it more complete, is if D-Unity were booked to spin this coming long weekend. *wishful thinking*

SPEEDY J this weekend my man! Minimal techno (and though I'd much rather see you experience a PROPER HARD techno event, but seeing as your a big house head, minimal will likely be far more agreeable to you man!)

and its at a venue I KNOW you love... FOOTWORK!!

This is an incredibly booking by Footwork. Seriously. Cant wait.

Another great review, Sheldon.

You make me want to give this place another shot very soon.

Nice to hear its already way busier than when I went. It sounds Rudee was having an off morning when I attended as well.

I heard this rumour as well... how can the king of early morning be done with early morning?! I hope it IS Addy. I'll probably be there with some friends to check it out. Here's hoping!

Although I haven't been to this place yet, I really don't see what's appealing about their Sunday parties besides the fact that it is somwhere to go other than CZ. It sounds too much like a "me too" club. Am I wrong here? Does the club offer something different than CZ other than just an alternative venue?

A good place to start would be to play different music than pitched up banging house which is the only thing you can hear at 95% of the EDM/afterhours nights on any given weekend.

I think this alone is a good enough reason for this place to give it a shot. Keep in mind, my afterhours days have been pretty much non-existent since Sonic closed it's doors - but I hear CZ is packed on a pretty regular basis. Sounds to me like Toronto could use a second option.
