Infusion & Jamie Stevens
If you have seen a band called Infusion playing live, you probably noticed that guy in the middle jumping around behind the equipment having fun. Well that's Jamie Stevens and that's the energy and passion he brings to his DJ sets - simply playing good and having a great time doing it.
You may or may not have heard of this band called Infusion. They're a 3 piece electronic band originally hailing from Wollongong (just near Sydney) founded by Jamie Stevens, now residing in Melbourne and are responsible for blisteringly energetic live shows taking them all over the world from Stockholm to Athens, New York to Budapest and at clubs like Fabic London, Tribal Sessions in Leeds and Womb in Tokyo. You may or may not know they managed to scoop 2 ARIA awards (Australia's own Grammys) 2 years in a row, a veritable handful of Australian Dance Music Awards and some rather nice reviews in the various publications around the world.
Stevens has co-produced Adam Freeland's first artist's album Now and Them, single-handedly scored a couple of films, made the odd white label bootleg or two, namely Bjork's Pagan Poetry and Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill and now co-owns and A&Rs for dieb audio, his new house label, with Stel and John Dalagelis. dieb audio has a very exciting schedule for 2008 with releases coming from such luminaries as Hipp-E, Slam, Smith & Selway, Deepchild, Tiger Stripes and more. Recently, his solo remixes have been placed on mixes by Deepgroove and even Digweed's Transitions 3 compilation on Renaissance. Stevens' latest solo original track Keep Her Space (forthcoming on dieb audio) is already being being played out by Sasha and Dubfire of Deep Dish and is set to appear on the Renaissance Masters 10 mis CD mixed by Dave Seaman.
With Infusion still as strong as ever touring and finishing off their 3rd album, Stevens has the urge to explore the realm of the club, moving from making music on the stage to DJing inside the DJ booth. "My taste in club music ranges far and wide, from deep tech minimalism, groove-based dirty techno to beautiful melodic deepness. For me, the all the music I play must have that X factor, a huge amount of groove and originality." Stevens says. "In other words, I'm passionate about good music, music that stands out and grabs your attention. Every so often when I'm given the right opportunity, I love to be able to play my music to a crowd with my own edits, versions, bootlegs and re-workings that only ever see the inside of a club when I get to DJ."
Now, what you probably don't know is that Jamie Stevens and he's been collecting and creating electronic music at a fanatical level since he was a child. Initially it was the film soundtrack that captured Stevens' imagination as he didn't connect with pop at a young age. The only pop he did understand was the 12" instrumentals of his older sister's Duran Duran and other early 80's New Romantics. At about the age of 10 he started making his own electronic sounds and music with the help of a Commodore C64 and a tape deck. It would probably make sense to know if you have heard Infusion's music, that he fell in love with Acid House, Depeche Mode (he attended his first gig with best friend and fellow Infusion-er Manuel at Depeche Mode's Violator gig in Sydney in 1991), New Order and The Cure in 1988 via Vangelis, Peter Gabriel and Jean Michel Jarre. In one fell swoop, he found all he loved about music - imagination and emotion.
