Communicating With Musicians (The Upper Hand)

Hey guys,

My friend John Juster has been working on this new way to communicate with musicians... It's something that can be really useful for DJs and live musicians to communicate with each other on stage. I've been doing a lot of stuff with live musicians doing improv overtop of my dj sets it's usually very one way, I don't have a real way of communicating with the musician apart from the occasional thumbs up.

This allows me to connect with my friend and work as a team onstage, really fun stuff right here- If this thing catches it could be crazy!

It's free at the bottom of the page and totally worth signing up for.

What's so new about hand-signals during a performance?

so why does your friend make his users sign up if it's free?

also i have to say one of the most amazing things to witness in jazz bands is the communication that goes on simply within the performance of the music itself

if you watch great jazz bands they have this kind of unspoken, ungestured almost telepathic connection to one another, that they can just feel and intuit the musical direction of the other band member and what s/he's feeling/meaning by what's coming out of the bell or chamber of his/her instrument

i find this at odds with your whole 'just gotta feel it' philosophy

there's also something to be said for chaotic and improvised performance, two people making independent choices that creates something really organic and wonderful

Honestly I don't know, but then he gets a directory of artists interested in it which is great.

I'm not saying that stuff isn't bad, or that this is the ultimate way, it's just another way of doing things. It's also scalable and easy to use. I'm still learning myself! But if you have 200 people jamming, this can work, it's just so much easier than having to talk over the music. If anything it's the exact same as eye gestures and slight body movements, just more defined.

This is all about just feeling it. Anyone can become the "conductor" and anyone can understand the signals. It's far less utilized in the dj/musician context- much more relevant for big jam sessions and improv shows.
