Sony in talks to burn Blu-ray on Xbox 360
Published: 5 hours ago; 8:54am PDT
by Marcus Lai

The Financial Times this week reported that Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are in talks to offer a Blu-ray disc drive for the Xbox 360 video game console.

Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics U.S. president, told the publication that the two companies are discussing a possible adoption of Blu-ray technology for the Xbox 360 successor.

The option could vary between a Blu-ray drive built-in to an Xbox 360 console or an external peripheral.

Microsoft Corp. in Feb. said that will end the production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player following an announcement from Toshiba Corp. that it will exit the HD DVD business.

The peripheral, which allowed Xbox 360 owners to view HD DVD format titles via an external drive, was discounted to $49.99 from $129.99.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player was introduced in Nov. 2006 as an option to view high-definition format titles.

Microsoft last month said it does not expect Toshiba's HD DVD exit to impact Xbox 360 hardware sales.

A Blu-ray disc drive would allow the Xbox 360 to compete with the PS3, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive in each unit sold.

It would also allow Sony to claim Blu-ray disc royalties from Microsoft and further high-definition disc sales.

The PS3 has held strong sales following Blu-ray disc's victory over HD DVD.

The 40GB PS3 has ranked in the top 10 at Amazon.com's Video Games division for several weeks. In addition, the $499 80GB PS3 SKU sold out at the retailer due to high demand.

Retailers are offering retail incentives to drive Blu-ray sales to customers.

Amazon is offering up to 50 percent off select Blu-ray disc titles.

This week, Best Buy stores are offering two free Blu-ray discs with the purchase of the Panasonic 1080p Blu-ray disc player.

------------------------------------------

Maybe its not surprising, but its still kind of ironic nonetheless.

Even with all the denials you knew they had to do it sooner or later. Wouldn't much make sense if they didn't.

Besides, this pretty much only means good things for Xbox kids - sure some of the "early adopters" (which I guess means anyone who bought one in the first 3 years ) are going to feel a bit fucked off, but I just hope my new Xbox lasts until the Blu ray ones are being sold, and proceeds to have either an RROD or other hardware failure that is covered by my four years of extended warranty replacement plan once they would exchange it for a Blue Ray model.

c0r version: Everything is coming up Milhouse.

Ya know, early adopters ALWAYS get fucked. Remember how I bragged about getting a 20GB PS3 back in Jan. 07 for $499.99? For that same amount now, I could get 80GB with a free fucking game. God damnit.

And yes, this is merely predictable, and this whole fiasco will benefit both parties, Microsoft for being on the winning HD train and Sony for reaping royalty benefits.

The other thing it does is open up a whole fuckload more space to 360 developers, so you could see some pretty interesting competition coming in the next couple of years.

I like it. A lot.

Well space isnt really an issue yes is it? Dont most games for the PS3 and the X360 still come on DL DVDs? Though it could come in handy in a couple of years time.

Man i wish they remade FF VII for the PS3...now that would be worth paying 500€ for a console. It would also be a good excuse to finally star using BD discs.

People keep saying an MGS4 port onto 360 is impossible due to disc space. (recently they revealed that MGS4 was sooo big that it couldnt even fit on a Blu-Ray disc, so Hideo Kojima admitted some shit had to be taken out) Imagine if that all of a sudden becomes possible BECAUSE of Sony themselves. Ironyyyyyyy.

Microsoft hedged their bets well with making the HD-DVD drive an optional add on.

I wonder how different this war would've been if MS decided to include the HD DVD drive in all Xbox 360's like they originally intended.

That's what I wanted to point out. Blu-Ray hardly had a presence on the market until the PS3 launched. Really the only reason why Blu-ray took over the way it did was because movie sales were almost 100% attributed to PS3 owners. I'm betting studios backed it BECAUSE of the fact that Sony was forcing consumers who wanted a PS3 to also buy into the Blu-ray craze, because it was included in the package no matter what. There's just no better way for something new to penetrate the market then to shove it down people's throats.

I'm betting the outcome would have been way different and this format war would have lasted a whole helluva lot longer.

i'm thinking that the blu-ray addon is to watch movies, not play games b/c if you burn games on bluray how are the early adopters supposed to play on their non-bluray consoles?
