Paul Van Dyk - Perth Review

Hey guys, review time!

Paul Van Dyk At the Globe

So the night started off with a few drinks at a friends place, all good. Get in the car, jam in a CD, and get excited about going see Paul Van Dyk. Then, half way down the freeway coming from Rockingham, one of my friends says “shit, I forgot my ticket”, so we had to drive back, get the ticket, and off we go again. Then as we are approaching the city, I got off at the wrong exit, one too early, so we spent another 10 minutes getting back on the freeway driving around rich south Perth. When we got back on the freeway, I got off at the right exit this time, but, I took a wrong turn and headed for Kings Park instead of the entertainment centre. But, it was all in good fun, and nobody really cared so it was a decent start to the night. We eventually got there at about 10:30.

Warren10 - 9 til 11

When we arrived everywhere except the dance floor was packed. That was fixed in about half an hour though with more people arriving. Warren10’s set was an alright warm up to the night at hand. He looked happy enough to be there, but didn’t really acknowledge the crowd a whole heap and looked sort of robotic with his actions. He played a very progressive set, which was alright. As I said, it was a good warm up for the crowd and the event, but, nothing more. Upstairs opened towards the end of his set, and we went up and got some seats, I figured I would need my rest for Paul Van Dyk’s set.

Chad D - 11 til 12:30

Chad D mixed on from Warren10 and his set was in the same style, very progressive. I can’t comment on how Chad D was in the booth since I couldn’t see him from the where I was sitting. There was nothing extremely notable for me in his set. But towards the end he lightened up and began to play more trance tracks to get the crowd ready for Paul Van Dyk’s set. We headed to the dance floor at about 12:15 when he dropped a track which I like a fair bit, but of course don’t know the name of, and danced the rest of his set out. Chad D stepped down from the decks at about 20 to 1 to make way for Van Dyk.

Paul Van Dyk - 12:30 til 3:30

Paul mixed on from Chad D, which surprised since internationals don’t usually do that. I think that shows a sort of respect for the dj beforehand, but that’s me, my opinion, yours is probably different. Paul Van Dyk’s opening tracks were very good. It made you want to get out there and move if you weren’t already. Although, that presented a problem. The Globe was absolutely packed and people just didn’t seem able to understand that if its full its full, and trying to push your way in isn’t going to make you any friends. Which was pretty disappointing, especially since it kept happening all night. At some parts in the Paul Van Dyk’s set it looked like the people at the front where being squashed against the stage.

The first 3-4 tracks were good, but from then on it dropped off for an hour or so. For the half hour after the hour drop off the tracks kept on getting better, and in the last hour the tracks he played were great. The last hour really brought it home. Since I’m crappy with track names I cant really tell you the tracks he put the needle to. One for sure was Ferry Corsten – Punk, which the crowd appreciated a fair bit and brought some energy back. Overall Paul’s set was a mixture of slightly progressive tunes and melodic ones. But for me they didn’t seem to go together well, sometimes there would be a female vocal track, and then the next would be all bass, deep and dark. It just didn’t fit for me. As for mixing, I couldn’t spot any major accidents. Which is surprising since all night he was having trouble with his left turntable. There was someone cleaning it, then looking at it every 45 minutes or so, and Paul was making doubly sure all his vinyl were clean before they went the turntable.

At one point in Paul’s set there was someone from the crowd who got on stage and was eventually picked up by no less than four security guards and carried off the stage into the back with his friends following after him. This, in an albeit extreme way, shows the attitude of some of the crowd that night. Totally inconsiderate, and not thinking about what their actions could lead to. I’ve read that he has often walked away from the booth in the middle of a mix due to things like that happening. Thankfully he didn’t and kept on going it didn’t seem to bother him that much. However even though there were some incidents there was still a friendly nature about the place, my friend noted that if he was resting on the stairs with his head in his hands then people would check if he was ok. Small things like that really add to the vibe of the place, and to the overall experience of the night.

Paul liked to play the air keyboard in lots of the melodic tracks and sometimes moved to the beat, but not often. He didn’t get into the crowd that much. His only acknowledgment of the crowd was a little smile and wave, at the start of the set, at the end and a few places in between when the crowd was cheering for him. When he did smile and wave, it reminded me of the way a small shy child would smile and wave to their parent’s friend.

The lighting at the globe for Paul Van Dyk was far, far better than the lighting at gatecrasher. Lights were actually in time with the music, and suited the music at most times too. So well done to lighting people. Overall though, I preferred Scott bond’s set last Friday at gatecrasher, Paul’s set to me was confused and didn’t really head anywhere.

Paul Van Dyk Finished at about quarter to 4 in the morning and we left after that since people had school in a few hours and weren’t keen on staying and others, like me, were about to fall asleep. We grabbed some food at fast eddies, and then drove home, more freeway fun!

If anyone has any tracks that they know Paul Van Dyk Played then list them, maybe we can get a semi track list going or something

Hello!

AWESOME....SIMPLY AWESOME..!!!

My only complains though, is that he played too many of the progressive sets, although few excellent songs like Massive, Punk, On the Run, and i guess few of his new songs I could not identify.

Globe was way too small for this I guess they must be thinking that since it's a weekdays not many ppl will turn up, but there were a lot of ppl and I think it should be held in Metro instead of Globe.

Anyway, I think PvD played excellently last night and I was enjoying myself very much (but I think that Tiesto's set in Two Tribes was way better than Paul's)

Anyone knows that track he played last night with the female vocals in it and has the word "...perfect day..." or something like that? Is that the song Perfect Day by Cosmic Baby and PvD?

The first uplifting tune he played was moon project - moments are forever. He definitely played punk and apparently he played kamaya painters - soft light. I actually trancespotted more but i was totally fucked by the end and i can't remember a single thing. It feels like a dream! WIERD

that guy didnt get up on stage either, he was dragged up as he collapsed on the floor. he was taken away in an ambulance later on.. taken a few blue domes apparently.
