review: JUSTICE @ Sound Academy

Decided to check this out last minute, and SO glad I did.

Got there fairly early with my girl, and Mario J was warming up the room. Played lots of fun, bumpy electro shit and the kids were loving it. Busy P (I believe), followed... and he had the crowd by the balls right from the get go. Loads of personality, said some pretty funny shit on the mic, and he even had the balls to drop "Sexual Erruption" by Snoop, just before he finished his set. LOL. Fucking stellar.

There was a bit of a break before Justice took to the stage and it took a while before they came on. Up until this point in the show, the production was pretty basic, with the exception of the lighting in the main room which is just amazing now. There was a huge buzz in the room and you could tell the place was ready to explode once the main act took to the stage.

The lights went off completely, and the crowd went mental. By this point, the main room was wall to wall, and even the upper VIP level where we were was packed... ON A MONDAY NIGHT. What a way to start a set. The speaker stacks had lights coming from them, the whole front of the stage had crazy robotic lights that would come and go, and of course Justice had their signature 'cross', right in the center of it all.

I wasn't at Daft Punk, but last night I got a feeling that this is the next closest act to them globally. Musically they are very similar, and production wise it's pretty damn close. They played most of the tracks from their 'cross' album, with a lot of re-edits, and a few surprises along the way. Half way through their performance, we decided to venture down to the main floor, where it was pretty much a rock concert atmosphere. Body surfing, fucking mosh pits, and people just losing their shit. Highlight tracks for me were 'Never Be Alone' (unknown edit/remix), and Phantom Pt. II. So sick.

I've gotta say, I don't think I have ever heard the main room at Sound Academy sound as rich as it did last night. The bass was so full, but not over bearing, and the clarity was great even in the upper level above the dancefloor. I'll definitely be checking more shows out in the future based on the improvements of this venue alone.

Most random, crazy, amazing Monday night I think I've ever had.

I was amazed with the whole production... not only were the tunes great, but the lighting was stellar.
I could guess that the crowd was 60% rockers/myspace yuppies and 40% everything else... including those who enjoy bangin house like this.

I could also guess that the 60% of the place that thought of these guys as a rock band would possibly think very differently if someone tried to tell them that Justice is primarily house music above all... and not a rock band.

I was disappointed to see the moshpit and short people getting trampled.
This clashing of rockers with nightclubbers left the room in much disarray as the clubbers don't wanna deal with the crowdsurfing and loads of violent shoving and pushing. As I see it, we could have done without the excessive crowding.

There's definitely 2 genres colliding into a new step in the progression of music genres.... ppl are seeing blurred differences between a rock concert and a DJ/LivePA performance night. I think it's a great thing.

Even the audio setup for the show was different. I'm 90% sure that Justice was sending out no more than 2 channels of distinct audio.... and the show may likely end up on a tour DVD cuz they were mixing 6 channels to a recording .... there's 5.1 right there.

Jeff pretty much hit the nail on the head with his review, couldn't have explained it better myself...there were a few moments you thought the building was gonna come down due to the enthusiasm of the crowd and some crazy tracks that were dropped (especially by Busy).

First time at the *new* Sound Academy, and thought they did a fantastic job all around from an event perspective...(except I understand they did have a bit of a backlog with the main coatcheck, but that's what happens when 95% of the people in attendance all go there at the same time).

Good times indeed.
