This might be logistically hard, but I was thinking we should do a mix competition, where we have a set of 25 tracks to choose from to do a mix that will fit on a CD. Everyone that participates in the competition has to work around the limitations of those 25 tracks to craft a great mix. We can start a pool for those 25 tracks. It should be fun
Note : 25 Track Pool/65-80 minutes /You Dont have to squeeze in all 25 /2 Wildcard Tracks
Has anyone done this before? What do you guys think.

I think it is a solid idea, except it may be more interesting to only offer a pool of 12-15 tunes, that way it will really showcase how different people choose to mix the same tunes

Also, you can use 2 tracks that arent in the 20-25 pool to flip things up a bit.

Yah personally I wouldnt mind like 15 track limitation, but It would be good to hear a bit of a deviation in the different mixes. I think 20-25 tracks will tie the hands enough but allow enough space to differentiate more between the mixes. 2 track wildcard would also make it a bit more fun, secret weapons
Maybe next time we can lower the limit to a 15 track pool, and 1 track wildcard. For now 20-25 tracks, crafted to fit a 80 minute CD.

This sounds fun! How will the tracks be chosen? will they be free releases (beatport promos maybe?) so everyone is able to download them?
these mixes are boring. the only reason i listen to mixes is to hear tracks i've never heard and to appreciate someone else's unique tastes.
also,
25 tracks in 80 minutes are too many. I usually play about 17-18 and that is a lot.
furthermore- beatport promos in general are terrible. i don't see how anything worthwhile can come of this beyond a little ego boost from internet friends

Whoever joins in, feel free to throw in 5 tracks into the pool that YOU would like to be part of the pool. Dont worry about the haters not liking them. We need to start building up a pool of potential tracks to use. Make sure these tracks are accessible through Beatport so that everyone can get a hold of the tracks to participate. They can be tracks from as far back as 1969 if you want, there is no requirement that they have to be super new.
Alzalam, Post up your 5
Also...innocent bystanders can post tracks they'd like to see in the competition even if they arent participating. Man...this is going to be hard to pull off.

I don't think you have to play all 25 - part of the fun is seeing what / how people choose to play out of the pool

Well thats why you have the hundreds of other mixes posted here for just that. This is a competition, for showing mixing, programming, track selection skills. I dont see how that is boring, when you have a bunch of people with the similar tools trying to craft their own unique boat.
Its a 25 track POOL, of which you have to cut down into a mix that will fit on a 80 minute CD. You can use all 25, if thats your style. Or you can only use like 12-17 of them, depending on how you mix and program. You do not have to squeeze 25 tracks into 80 minutes, not at all. You dont even have to use the whole 80 minutes...minimum 65 and maximum is 80.

I guess this is more of competition in the compilation type environment.
Small pool of tracks, how the same two tracks used by 2 different DJ's are mixed or placed might be different between one DJ and another.
If we have 5 DJ's partcipate, each will have their 5 chosen tracks as part of the mix, and we'll work from there. If we have 10 DJ's participate, then we will have to cut the 50 tracks down to 25, with a minimum of 2 tracks from each DJ(chosen by the DJ) showing up giving us 20, and the remaining 5 chosen as a group. So it might take some time to get the logistics down, but it should be fun if it actually goes down.
