Second, I'm not sure if burying the drums and having the repeating synth part blasting ad nauseum was done on purpose for effect, but I found the mix terribly annoying and unbearable. The melodies were pretty nice.

I would say that making more of a buildup of the melody would be nice... start with that same timbre with a more atonal melody, and then after 16-32 bars of that, break into a melody.

The melody is too reppetitive, and the bass is annoying as its the melody just ~2 octaves lower. Try to make it so theyre not the same.

Other than that, the reverb is particularly annoying IMHO. Try to lower the total use of reverb on the synths, and use it more sparingly... perhaps in only the highest 8 bars of the buildup.
