if you're buying a used car privately, then the person selling to you should have ALL the necessary documentation. You're the buyer, and so the seller should be making it easy for YOU to take the car away.

If you have no luck with the MTO website... try finding an office in the yellowpages (blue-pages section) for the MTO dept of motor vehicles... there should be people there to help you with what you're looking for.

you can consider using CARFAX to check out the history of the vehicles you're interested in. my friend used it a few years back and found out that the 1st owner of the car he was looking to buy was a car rental place... no thanks!!

On the back of the ownership for the car with the previous owner, there's a spot on the back to fill the information for the buyer of the vechicle, which is you. Name, address, all this stuff, then there's a spot where they sign and you sign I'm pretty sure, one or the other.

The person makes a bill of sale basically just saying they are selling the car to you for X amount of $ stating their name, your name, the date, and they sign it. You take that to the ministry, the signed ownership, and it cost like $140 roughly I think to transfer over, at least that was the cost for my friend buying my old car last weekend lol.

You have 6 days to transfer over the ownership after the bill of sale is made.

We just made a bill of sale on a piece of paper, it doesn't have to be anything crazy.

make sure you say you paid cheap for the car in order to save on the taxes u pay at the MTO!

When someone sells you the car, ull need an inspection in PASS status before transferring the car. Might want to do an e-test too

Yeah true. I sold mine to my friend as is, even though it's in good working condition, so he wouldn't have to pay for an e-test or get it certified yet. He already has a car though and didn't want to plate or insurance this car yet (it's just sitting in his garage), so my situation is a little different, but not much.

I also always bought new before I bought my first used car a few years ago.

As explained in other posts... the seller should have everything for you. VIN number history is available at MTO and those computer booths at malls.

I decided to go used moving forward because I prefer having two cars, for winter and summer. My winter beater is my '95 Hyundai "just won't die" Accent I bought new 12 years ago, and a '05 Mazda3 is what I'm looking for now for winters.

If you're selling, the used car seller's package has all the instructions you need, and I was told it was pretty easy to follow.

I know about the taxes thing. my second car was used and was a "gift" from a family member so i didn't have to pay taxes.. but i didnt' deal with anything for that. just picked up the plates


and what if I'm not buying a car? I found a motorcycle and a scooter I want.. trying to decide which one to go with. you still need the emissions test for them? (i should just look it up myself )

Quick summary and a few corrections...

The main points are:

• The transfer application itself is on the back of the vehicle permit.
  
• The bill of sale is not a special form; it just needs to contain the VIN (preferably with a short description), buyer's and seller's names and signatures, the date of sale, and the price.
  
• You absolutely do need to get a safety inspection, and if the vehicle is more than a couple of years old, you'll also need an e-test. Otherwise, you can transfer the vehicle, but not as "fit" and that means you can't legally drive it.
  
• If the seller already had a safety done, then the certificate is valid for 36 days and should be given to you upon sale. Dealerships usually don't do a safety until the vehicle is sold, and they tack on an additional fee after the sell price; you might be able to negotiate these terms with a private seller.
  
• You pay taxes to the MTO when you register, not the seller (unless it's a dealership).
  
• If you somehow manage to score the vehicle for less than the Red Book wholesale value, keep in mind that taxes apply to the higher number.
  
• Carfax will only help you for cars, but if it's a motorcycle, there are other services you can use to check history, like Autocheck (not an endorsement, just the first name that comes to mind).
