Well that is part of the problem. From my understanding, there wasn't much of a case, and it could have been down to Mexican incompetence+corruption. Mexico was just happy letting her sit there and rot, until the government got involved.
It's funny because it actually took Paul Martin's involvement to trigger Harper to do anything. Until PM PM started to get interested and fight for Brenda, Harper washed his hands. Then all of a sudden, it became a big deal and the Fed got involved.
Looks like diplomacy failed in this case. But being convicted and having the world know your story *might* be better than sitting in a jail, in a foreign country without charge.

Brenda’s Story
Brenda Martin is a Canadian woman who has been
imprisoned in a Mexican jail since February 2006.
Brenda’s family have been desperately attempting
to raise awareness of her plight, calling on the
Canadian Government to ensure that she receives a
fair trial.
Brenda was the chef for Alyn Richard Waage, owner
of an investment company that turned out to be
fraudulent. Waage fired Brenda as his chef in 2001
with severance pay, where she than invested the
money into Waage’s business which she thought was legitimate.
One month later Waage was arrest for fraud and is currently serving a 10 year sentence in North Carolina. Brenda was picked up by Mexican authorities years later for allegedly being involved in the scheme. Although she was charged with being a member of a criminal organization and money laundering, there has never been a trial where she has been able to present her defence and she is not aware of any evidence being presented to prove her guilty of those charges. |
CoR Version:
Canadian woman works as chef, gets fired with severance and invests that money in what turned out to be her former boss's shell company.
He was arrested and convicted of fraud, he denies Brenda having any knowledge of the fraud.
She is arrested and held without due process - or access to basic human nessesities for two years.
