A label wants to sign a track of mine... but there is something fishy about this...

So i mailed out a track and got a response:

quote:
This sounds cool!

If you have more of this Acid Stuff we can do a release on ***** Records! It is an Acid only netlabel! I can't pay you any money because I earn no money with the releases! You hold all the rights to your music you give me only the right to release them and promote them!

Let me know what you think!

Greetz

How come he can't offer me any money? Im not doing music for the money but please throw me a bone. Can I earn any $$$ this way? Or is he just ripping me off?

somebody pls...

A netlabel is more or less a 'hobby' label, for the fun and love of music. It offers music as free downloads. That's why he can't pay you. There are tons of these labels online, and some of them offer great quality music as well.

And as he said you keep all rights, which basically means a bit of exposure and you could still sign the track commercially at another label later on. If the other label would like it that the song is released free on the web earlier, I don't know...

imo, don't fk around and waste time with no name net labels. what's the point? just put your songs up on myspace for free download. when you get good, aim for decent labels.

regardless, you're unlikely to ever make much money from your music, even on a good label. if you're looking for money from music, your productions should get your name out so you can do live shows/djing. that is basically the only place you might earn a few quid.

A netlable huh? I have never heard that term. I wondered if there was such a thing. A producer I know is going to do this same sort of thing, just so him and I can release our tracks for free. We both have decided there's not much money to be made, so why bother with trying to sell tracks on beatport, ect. We're tired of dealing with commercial labels too. We've both had a few less than desireable experiences. It just isn't worth it.

Myspace is not for very good for track distribution IMO, since the bitrate for the MP3's have to be scaled way down to meet the size limit.

What are some of the better EDM netlables? I'll do a search, but thought you all might know of some.

I'm just curious - what could one expect to make from a track if it were released on some of the "bigger" labels - e.j. Ajuna, Armada, Vandit, Ninja, Euphonic and so on...

Like what would be considered "low, mid, high" type of deal?

i know some reasonably big amateur producers were signed to one of those labels and never saw a cent from 4-5 releases. "promotional costs" outweighed their sales.

i'm pretty sure everyone knows which label it is though... they're pretty notorious.

there was a thread a little while ago calculating how much you would get for a beatport top 10... i'll see if i can dig it up.
