My Dynaudio BM5a tweeter just exploded...

I am just beyond words at this moment.

I had the mixer set to -55 dB and was playing CS:Source with fellow goons when I hear this huge pop and a fizzling sound. The tweeter in the left cabinet burst and now it wont work at all.

Ive only had them for a few weeks. I have never driven them anywhere near capacity in that time and in CS:Source I was playing it bloody quiet because its past midnight over in Ireland.

What could cause something like this to happen?

That's sad... But on the bright side you've only had them for a short time, so there shouldn't be any problems returning them to the dealer, I would guess.

Do you have any issues with ground loops? Is the power connection "earthed"?

I've seen the same thing happen to a friend of mine due to a faulty mixer that produced way too much voltage on one of its outputs in certain conditions.

Regards

Its earthed because its the 3 pin plug you get with pretty much every electrical appliance in the UK. What kind of voltage do you need to feed to a tweeter to completely burn it out? What the hell could cause that much current to burn it to destruction?

The signal chain I have is pretty bare, Dynaudio BM5as. 2 balanced Hosa cables. M-Audio Delta 1010. +4dB on the output with the +4dB switches flipped on the back of the speaker cabinets. Both plugged into a surge protected multisocket thingy (with the surge light still on so its not knackered yet).

I dont understand.

Help.

I've only had them for a short time but Digital Village shipped me a pair of broken Dynaudio BM5as first and I had to get them replaced. I ordered them on July 3rd. It took months to get returns shipped out and then a few weeks more because they kept sending it to the wrong address. Its now September 15th and I have had hardly any use of them in that time.

Are they active monitors? If not the amp needs to be at least twice the rating for the speaker. ( Tho I thought they were active).

If I were you, I'd try and contact Dyn direct and explain your situation with the retailer and the problems you have had. Tell them what has happened to the speaker and how, and show them a copy of your receipt. See if they will ship a replacement direct, as you don't want to be stuffed around by the retailer again. Make it clear you were not happy with their service. They might be accomodating.

+4 is standard for all pro audio. Only consumer uses -10.
Any decent soundcard will output +4. Any decent mixer/monitor etc. will accept it.
It gives you a much better S/N-ratio.

Sometimes, you get a dud pair. Doesn't matter what you are buying.

If you only bought them the other day, then take them back. Simple as. Don't try to fix it, don't attempt to open them up and look inside, just put them back in their box and return them.

Also email Dynaudio and let them know this has happened. They would rather know that there are faulty products out there so that they can fix the problem for everyone else.

Shame it happened to ya, but hey, you're not the first. When I bought a brand new mixer a few years ago, it just didn't work, full stop, just gave out feedback. I took it back to the shop and walked out with a new one same day.

I set the input to receive the signal at +4 dB because I am running a balanced rig. The only unbalanced peice of kit I have is my Virus B.

Digital Village are sending me postal slips to return them. But its been 3 months since I ordered them and I am on first name terms with 2 of their returns department staff. Which can't be good.

really, the only thing which can explain this is a physical defect.

the fact that it has happened before suggests that DV aren't storing their monitors appropriately.
