Basic Trance music has 4 Club Beats which might have some lowpass and a phat bass of any style coming on the second eight of a bar. Most of the type these basses start swelling up in the beginning of the bar so you get this kind of bass pattern
code:
/\ /\ /\ /\
/ \/ \/ \/ \
and the beats just fall on the lowest points of this bass line.. get it?
usually make bass lines with TS404, you can basically make everything with that baby anyway
then we have a few choices, the more standard trance has low and high pads, probaly filling up about your whole hearing range at least midlow. You can also put some TS404 in midlow. I like the (more hard trance) way of just filling every bar with 16 TS404 notes, that gives a very paranoid effect in combination with a lot of REVERB which makes the sound twist in stereo. But as I say filling whole bars with notes isn't the way of making basic, relaxing trance music. The best way is using strings.
Then we also have high notes which we can make using nice TS404 patterns, and we make sure we play with cutoff for good swellings and stuff like that ...
More about the rhytm. Trance most of the time has open hi-hat 4 times in a bar on every 2nd eight so you get this
code:
_+_+_+_+
with the + being the open hi-hat. You might strongly concider adding a closed highad on the _. You might also concider changing the pattern for the last note.
The more basic trance stuff is 2 hand claps, or snares, in a the bar on the 2nd quarter and 4th quarter.
Use reverb, it makes a lot of difference, ecspecaially don't ever forget to reverbate those strings a LOT...
From then you can go a lot of sides, you can make paranoid agressive basic TS404 sounds on steady basses creating uplifting. You can use pads on smooth basslines creating softer trance, perhabs good to take vocals in that, or you can just make heavy basses with heavy upswelling bass and not much but powerfull dark and reverbating sounds creating hard-trance.
I personally like some good percussion, bongo's RULE!!!
One thing that's really a lot harder on trance then on techno is that on trance you need a lot of strange fades to make it interesting, with techno you can actually keep the beat going for minutes without dissapointing people.
Ecspecially in uplifting segments I find it hard not to make stuff boring...
