I've been arranging a mix on Ableton using my V6's and thought I was finally done, until I took a listen on my iPod headphones, which is normally use day-to-day, and the eq'ing and volume control sounded awful. But then I listened again on my V6's and it sounded great. I'm planning on sharing this mix with a few friends too and they'd normally use ipod-like headphones. So do I stick with the truer V6 equing or redo most of it based on what ppl normally use to listen? Or make two differently eq'ed mixes? Is there another way to deal with this?

Earbuds are shit, don't EQ for them.

i say stick to the v6's. eqing it just for ipod headphones would limit to enjoying the music with just ipod headphones. the second you play the mix in your car, or virtually any other speakers it's going to sound a lot worse than if you used the v6's. maybe you should configure the eq of the ipod itself to maybe sound a bit better with the ipod headphones?

If they're just using their ipods to listen to your mixes, why the hell would you eq it for the v6?

Unfortunately this is the very question that professional producers are asking too. Causes tracks to be very bass heavy when played on a proper system. Use the V6's. Tell your friends to buy a proper pair of earphones.

I deleted my previous response... I read V6 and thought KRK V6 monitors. Anyway, you can still make a cd and listen to it on various systems (your car, computer speakers, home stereo, etc.) to ensure it sounds at least decent on each. Doesn't have to be perfect, but I'd recommend mixing at levels that sound decent on the systems the people listening to it will be hearing it on.

in my opinion stay with the V6's. would you rather your sound be custom tailored for joggers using earbuds or custom tailored to blow the roof off being played in an adequate audio system?

Generally speaking, music is tailored to work on both, and eq'd properly it will. If it only sounds good on one, it's not eq'd properly. And eq'ing for headphones of any kind, iPod or the V6's, isn't the same as doing it specifically for "an adequate audio system." Headphones should be used as as a reference, not a primary source.

Rule of thumb is you want music to sound good everywhere and not rely on the listener to have a nice audio system... especially if you know they are going to be listening on iPod headphones. If done correctly it will be fine on both.

I guess it's not that big a deal if you are talking about one or two cd's for friends. But if you are trying to build a following or get people interested in your music, it's worth spending the extra few minutes to get it right.
