Given Ableton Live and a couple decent VSTi's...

... what else do you think I need, or would be highly desirable to have?

One thing for sure is probably a decent compressor that can do sidechaining, as for whatever reason, they didn't include this with Ableton.

You might need sort of a trancegate effectprocessor. Like sonicbytes Gat'R or Camelspace. Might be usefull to thicken your tracks with some subtle gated pads (exzessive use of these is quite dated)

You'd also need a basic drum and percussions sample library

thanks for the suggestions all,

echo, ill take another look, but when i last dove into this over half a year ago, i picked up a third party compressor to do the sidechaining. no doubt got that advice from here.

Ableton 7 has a sidechain compressor, it was one of the main selling points. I reckon you should get the sonalksis effects, they're pretty good for bread and butter. I like IK multimedia for reverbs. Stay away from waves. And the cowbell is essential

I have the gold bundle and find the processors very usable. They do exactly what I want them to do. A lot of studio engineers use Waves processors, it's really up to each person to decide what they're going to use. I'm sorry they don't suit your production style, but a lot of people use them just fine.

waves are good, but for the price they aren't the best value. it's hard to recommend them to anyone doing stuff at home imo, when you have companies like voxengo and wavearts making as good/better products for a fraction of the price.

I'm not saying they're not good, but like echo said, I think there are plenty of people who give a better money to quality ratio. Sonalksis work a lot better for me I have to say. But waves are OK, I was probably too hard on them.
