My laptop battery lasts 10 minutes

absolutely pathetic. anyone have theories on maximising battery lifespan? does anyone else have this problem? i mostly have the laptop plugged in to the mains at my desk. now it dies in ten minutes. at 77% it said it was going to reserve power. in the time it took to write this post it went from 33% to 0%. in theory it should be off by now...

rechargeable batteries always die after repeated use... time to order a new one. if you really need it away from a plug until then, completely draining the battery then charging it to full will give its maximum life

thats only for batteries that have a charge memory such as nickel-cadmium. lithium ion and nickel-metal hydride do not require it.

Try changing the setting so when you unplug the laptop it’ll dim the screen anywhere from 30-50% That should save you a lot of power. You’re best bet is obviously buying a new battery… for that you should definitely checkout ebay.

Beware of EBay batts...

They're usually cheap knock off's and have a very shitty lifespan...

Best bet is buy a namebrand battery...but pricey...

Laptops are so cheap these days...its like ink cartridges...

Do you buy a new battery or just a new laptop...

When your laptop is plugged in, you should take the battery out...having it plugged in while the battery is still in is what killed it.

(I know, I did this to my own. Battery life went from 3 hours to 1 now )

Avg battery life for a notebook is about 3-4 hours, the half life of it (meaning how long it takes for it to lose it's charge down to half of the original) is about a year. So after a year it should be 1.5-2 hours and half of that in another year. So your battery is probably a few years old I assume.

I seem to recall reading something about Dell and other computer rigging their batteries to essentially become useless after x amount of charges.. where as they should be able to last significantly longer. This forces people to buy the batteries more often.

i KNOW i read about this somewhere last year... looking for an article now. Read it in more than one place.

EDIT: found something about it!

evidently, but when i drop $$$ on a new battery i want to know the ways to maximise its lifespan.

the amount of time actually spent off a power source was minimal so the draw on the battery should not have been high as i pointed out

i will check the kind of battery, but i know some have 'memoryless' capacity

in this sense i mean it is fine if you drop the battery to 70% or 50% and then want to charge back up vs having to drain it fully and re-charging. has anyone experienced if either of these treatments is more or less detremental to the battery?
