It's for Champions, and involves the top teams across Europe (top 4 from England, Spain, and France, etc.), and UEFA Cup is the best of the rest (usually the 5th and 6th from those same leagues, cup winners, and the top teams in other crappy leagues from the continent).

right, because i was watching a barca game and the announcer said something to the effect of

now that barcelona is longer number two in the league it would have to qualify for Champions league...so that's why i was asking.

and since i haven't seen any UEFA cup games but i keep hearing about it i was wondering.

i recently started to get into soccer, seriously that is.

i always used to watch just the world cup as a kid, and nothing else.
so i still don't know the ins and outs of everything.

Yes, the Champions League is the main competition, and UEFA Cup is a secondary competition.

The top leagues in the UEFA ranking by nations (Italy, England and Spain) work in the following way:

a) the champion and the 2nd placed go directly to the Champions League

b) the 3rd and 4th placed go into a knock-out round versus teams from other countries. Whoever wins those games, goes to the Champions League. Whoever loses, goes to UEFA Cup.

c) the 5th, 6th placed, or possibly others, depending on who wins the national cup(s), go to the UEFA Cup.

So what you heard the commentator talking about is that Barcelona no longer applies to a) but will go to b).

The leagues that are weaker than the italian, spanish and english ones, have less teams going into these competitions. For example in Portugal the 4th placed goes to the UEFA Cup instead of playing the knock-out round for qualifying into the Champions League. In really shitty countries like Armenia or whatever, only the champion can go to the Champions League, and even then they have to win 3 knock-out rounds to reach it.

I think its rubbish how a team can finish 4th and win the champions league it really should be the champions from each country then they would have the right to call it the champions league but like everything else its about the money.

Well that's the whole platform Platini was running on when he became President of UEFA, to reduce the number of teams coming from the bigger leagues in Europe to allow more room for actual 'champions' to make it to group stage, etc.

Who knows, we could see some changes in the future, but seeing how bureaucratic the process can be (e.g. we have to wait until 2010 until for the Champions League Final to be held on a weekend, even though the change was made in 2007), it may take some time until it's fully approved.

That doesn't make any sense. The Champions League would be what...5, 6 teams? That would be incredibly boring. Adversely, is it fair to deny Chelsea a spot in the Champions League because they're TWO points away from Man United?

The difference is the Champions League is broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN Deportes while UEFA Cup is broadcasted on Fox Sports and Fox Sports en español.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the anthem for the Champions League is the gayest thing you'll ever hear. if you close your eyes you can swear you're hearing the anthem to sensation white and not to a football tournament.
