Hey guys,

I've noticed over the last two weeks I've found myself in a bit of a rut when it comes to mixing, but more specifically adjusting my eq's.

For example I can beatmatch and cue up a track fine so when I bring it in it's phrased properly or whatever ya call it so when one bassline stops, another starts, same goes with melodies, etc etc. Anyways my issue is when I have been mixing lately I can't seem to adjust my eq's correctly for good transitions, like I'll bring in a new track but still you'll hear the bassline/melody from the only one and when I decide to kill it completely it just sounds off and dodgy.

So really just asking if anyone has any tips in the area of adjusting your equalizers during transitions that could better improve my mixing.

First off, record each time you mix. This will allow you to listen to what worked and what did not with a fresh set of ears. I also find that less is better. I find that by turning down EQs at new phrases of the live track while gradually increasing the fader of the cued track works pretty well. Basically, don't allow a whole jumble of sound to be playing all at once.

concentrate. i know when i just mix for the hell of it the transitions wont be that good. but if im recording a mix and focusing a lot on how i will EQ the tracks, it comes out a lot better. Think about the bassline/melody and imagine it in your head witch elements from each track you want to keep/leave out and witch ones i will bring in later /take out later.

We all go through those phases and I always find that when I get out of them my mixing is much more better

Yeah I've been practicing a lot over the past week. I did a 3 hour gig on friday night on an awesome system which was insanely loud and everything went really well and gave me the chance to experiment a lot
