any DAW which supports surround sound will do this...

eg. pro tools, cubase, nuendo, reaper, logic, sonar, etc.

you then use the stereo panner to get it to go where you want. you need a sound card with 4 outs though, obviously.

thanks for your answer! Does cubase, logic or anything like that have unlimitted possibilities in this kind of work? I mean what if I want to use 10 or 20 speakers? Also what hardware (soundcard) has the most outputs?

Well, it depends how you go about it. On any DAW you could just route an audio channel straight to a hardware output. However, you wouldn't be able to do stereo to surround panning etc.

The idea is basicly to make a wall of speakers where i would be able by drawing something on the computer screen (via a specific software)to make a sound follow a line, a curve (or whatever i drew) on the speakers wall.

Well im not sure you understand that cuz my english is pretty bad...

Anyway there is no budget, i guess i just have to find the soundcard with the more outputs on it.

Probably the cheapest way to do this...

get a bunch of these:

then combine them all under one ASIO driver:

double check ASIO4ALL does this though. i've never used it, so i don't know.

Youre gonna have to use Max MSP. As far as I know no DAW has a surround panner for more than four speakers, since theres not enouh dimensions on your computer screen. So yeah. Max msp. Good luck.

Nuendo has it for almost any possible setup. I'm not sure if cubase has the same surround plugins available.

Out of curiousity, how would that work? can you ahve twenty speakers and route a volume level to each one? Is it just like faders on a mixer, like one fader for each output?

I don't think so by using the panning plugins. I'm not sure up till where it supports surround panning. Of course it does 5.1 but I never went higher than 6.1. I doubt it will let you build a setup with 20 individual channels, but with 4 speakers it should work

I think you need to route every channel to a single output on your audio interface if you want more than 8 channels or so, but panning the audio across multiple channels like this is going to be a lot of work this way.

Back to answering your question: You can create a surround bus in Nuendo. The Nuendo surround panning plugin let's you choose your setup. It displays it like it's looking at you from above. So you get a 2d representation of where your speakers are. Theres a dot/locator in the middle, you can just slide it towards where you want the sound to be located and the plugin calculates the volumes necessary on each speaker to give the sound the location as it has in the plugin It's really simple to use.
