I try to approach it different everytime. Sometimes I create some wicked sound first by messin about with my synths and effects, and I will try to make several parts for that sound. Then I might go straight to the bass even before the kick, since for me one of the most important parts is the bass. Then I go to hats and claps, basically I kinda go ass backwards but, for me when I get the lead or melody and the bass going the rest is a smooth ride home. But that is just the way I do it sometimes.

If you try different ways of approaching your songs everytime, you can have many good songs in different styles or sounds. But on the other hand if you work the same everytime, you can produce more songs more quickly. So I guess it is really just preference.

yeah i keep coming to the realization more and more that if i do things in a rigid pattern, i become less creative, especially if i force myself to produce in a certain manner/order (which really only forces me to produce within my own self-imposed guidelines, once again making it difficult to be creative).

argh, gotta try something else i suppose. /frustrated atm

going completely off on a tangent, sometimes shit just comes to me and production is a breeze, other times (especially when i try to force myself to work on a project, or set productive goals for myself) i get nothing. argh

The rhythm section always comes first for me, it's just so easy to build everything around it. It's actually not a conscious choice either, it just happens.

I've sometimes tried to work in a linear fashion too - you know, start from the intro and work my way through the track and see what happens. That sometimes provides some rather interesting results...

Depends what is going on in my head really, if i have a melody i want to put down, then ill go with that, sometimes its bass first or pads.
I then just build from there. I cant say there is a systematic approach to me making tunes.

Although one thing i do constantly is spend time making really wierd sounds and FX, and then occasionally i'll think......oooh....i can make a tune out of that.

Yeah, percussions have always been the most fun for me so i usually start with that but i suck at making melodies so by the time i make one that is pretty good i get bored of the whole track. I work much better with a midi keyboard but i am to broke for that.

i always get a nice beat going....cus usually i get pissed when messing around trying to make a catchy lead or a sweet bassline, so its really important that i have a good beat goin so that i stay interested in the project...if i cant get anything workin, and the beat behind it all is just 'ok' then i trash the project, get pissed, and call it a day.

having a sweet drum loop keeps me goin.

I do it this way because it only makes sense to me.

ALWAYS do the melody/synth line first.
Your synth line is what EVERYTHING else in the track is building towards, so if you don't have it defined, how will you know how to alter earlier elements so it "makes sense".

I just couldn't imagine doing a kick and bass first, than punching away on the keys trying to come up with a kick/bass line that fit the atmosphere it would ultimately turn in to. But thats just how I start.
