thanks, that brings up another question... how would one take an electric guitar and have it output something that's similar to the acoustic sound?

There are probably a lot of methods to do this - from my experience, you can take a properly recorded acoustic track and throw some effects on it. Ableton (and others I'm sure, I just use Ableton) has a number of guitar effects already preloaded that you can tweak... or of course make your own effects, too.

One couldn't.
They sound totally different but the closest you'll get is by either running it direct in with no amp or getting an acoustic emulator, I thinl boss and Digitech sell them...

buy an acoustic electric guitar. ovation makes relatively cheap nice ones. or turn the pickup switch to the "bass" setting or the humbucker pickup closest to the bridge and don't use a distortion pedal. or as previous poster said, buy an acoustic simulator.

edit: in the end, imo, if you want that really warm, organic acoustic guitar sound, the best thing you could do is acoustic guitar + nylon strings + mic.

You are right - I misread this. I thought he wanted an acoustic to sound electric, which (while not perfect) would be much easier than the other way around.
