What is the purpose of the banner type things the captains trade with eachother at the start of the game?

I'm not really too sure. I guess it's just a symbol/gesture of friendship between nations. In tonight's case, a souveneir to the Greeks!

yeah thats what I thought, but then what do they do with them? pin them up in some building? throw them away, I dunno.
