Review: Alecia Hush & DJ Rudy @ Jolly
Popped down to Jolly for some beat therapy and a beer or two last night--i have to admit, it has become one of my favourite Thursday night haunts. I like the small intimate size and ambiance of the place---oh and the beats are good too.

Yesterday I got a face book message from Alicia Hush announcing her latest promo, Pawn Shop Pro (from: http://www.aliciahush.com) and I gave it listen yesterday at work. Ugh, not my bag...not my bag at ALL. It is the epitome of the tech-house/minimal stuff that I'm not into that seems to pervade a few Toronto house music clubs and DJ cd books of late. That's ok, not for me, I'll pass--then of course on the way to Jolly I find out she's spinning, lol. But her set at Jolly (at least the last 20 mins I caught) was bumpy and funky and I didn't mind it at all. Yeah, I know, I shouldn't judge a DJ simply by their latest demo, a little presumptuous on my part. She was alright! Watching her bob behind the decks to the funky beats got the energy level up nicely. Also saw Lars of YM there, heard they had a blast in Buffalo. International, w00t.

Rudee hit the decks after Alicia and the sound he played is the real point of my post. It was tribal--but not like the deep dark Tribal I was used to hearing. And not the light tribal that Irgo can do so well in opening sets or in his Jaxx House promo sets. The best way I could describe it is 'back to the roots' or "real" African tribal. It was really cool to hear the chants modified and woven in with lots of hand-drum beats cleverly crafted over thumping bass lines. It felt a lot more natural than the typical tribal set I was used to (and love). I was totally loving it. I would love to get my hands on a set of similar feel. I think it is sort of in line with Yoruba Soul Orchestra which I'm thinking of hitting Canada Day Monday night (@ Mod Club) to hear some soul-drums and live house music. I'm really feeling the more soulful beats lately, an awesome contrast to the high energy pounding beats that I also enjoy so much.
I had to tear myself away from Rudee's set to hop over to hotel as I wanted to wish Joe Manzone a very happy brithday. I'm still raving about their set with Joubin many months ago--blew my mind (I had never stayed out so late on a Thursday in my life!). Happy birthday buddy, have a great weekend. Joey Seminara on the decks was totally bringing the energy, along with Jelo, MC Flipside and Hatiras after. All star line up or what.
Barbina--thanks for dancin' it up for me, see you Sunday @ the boat cruise!!
Now for Film on Saturday, Cam Maxwell & Joey Seminara, back to back, then the bound by sound boat cruise. So much for a rest weekend... whoa. Who's in?
