So now Toronto's brilliant mayor wants to tear down the Gardiner

What a douche bag. I have to ask who is paying them off to get such a contract? Seriously what a corrupt city.

City Considers Tearing Down Section Of The Gardiner

Whether you rely on it to get to work or hate the look of it and want it torn down, the Gardiner Expressway always seems to be a topic of debate somewhere in the city.

The downtown thoroughfare is once again the centre of conversation after city officials announced they're considering ripping part of the expressway down.

The demolition would happen between the Don Valley Parkway and Jarvis as part of a major waterfront development initiative. Members of Waterfront Toronto's board of directors will sit down to discuss the proposal at a meeting on June 12.

"This is the most practical approach and offers the greatest public benefits," Mayor David Miller said, "removing the eastern section of the Gardiner is an affordable step that will allow us to develop the East Bayfront, Lower Don Lands and West Don Lands properly while enhancing the public realm along Lakeshore and improving access to our waterfront. We have already seen what can be done."

If the proposal is approved by the Waterfront board it would then go to the city's Executive Committee before it's finally sent to council for final approval.

"It's time to address the long standing issue of the Gardiner," John Campbell, President and CEO of Waterfront Toronto, said in a statement. "Waterfront Toronto is advancing planning and implementation of new communities around the Gardiner. The challenge is to find realistic options that address revitalization objectives and intelligent, sustainable city-building principles including looking to transit to accommodate future growth. Ultimately, any option should help us build a more beautiful city and waterfront."

City Councillor Joe Pantalone is for the idea and said Torontonians will get some big benefits in exchange for traffic delays should this plan go through.

". you're going to get clear view of the lake. You're going to get developers developing buildings which are on a street level, like University Avenue," he said. "What would you rather have, a University Avenue between Jarvis and the Don River valley, or would you rather have the Gardiner Expressway?"

Maybe they should turn Gardiner into a tunnel so they can build a bunch of Condos over it.

My position is that i dont care if they tear down the gardiner as long as they put a FREEWAY with equal or greater capacity in it's place. Oh and it has to be toll free. These clowns want to replace it with university avenue! A tunnel would be a great idea but how would the city and namely city officials make any money?

This has been an issue for years now..and I don't think it would be a bad thing..

Not everyone has the ability to go up north to a cottage...for those that live and work in the city and surrounding areas..the waterfront is the only getaway within the city that is accesible and it should be developed....not just a board walk..and a couple of parks..we can look at the vancouver waterfront for some inspiration...

Our waterfront is garbage as it stands now..

I think the city has gone to some lengths to develop Toronto in the past few years..they have done an amazing job in the downtown core..and I do believe they really are trying...

Maybe i'm not privy to some sort of inside information and don't want to jump on some "corruption" bandwagon....

I say tear it down and give the people of this city a waterfront that they are deserving of...

I agree. That part of it is rarely congested, so as long as they build a way to direct the traffic easier after tearing it down, I'm fine with this. Too bad I'll be retired by the time this whole redevelopment project is actually finished.
