monitor placement

when standing up your monitors, i know that you're typically supposed to stand it up vertically with the tweeter at ear level. does placing the monitors horizontally make much of a difference in quality?

Why not try it out and judge for yourself?

it's that i don't really have any place to put my monitors right now in my current room, and no place to test it. so i decided to build a desk for my equip with stands for the monitors. it would be more convenient and i think maybe nicer looking if they were placed horizontally, but i don't want to really diminish that much of it's purpose.

Because of the physics of sound, the lows will sound exactly the same no matter how the speaker is oriented. The highs, which are produced by the tweeter, are much more sensitive to placement. However, put at ear level (or close to it), you shouldn't have a problem no matter how the speaker is orientated.
So in short: it's the same.

it's better to have your monitors vertical

it has to do with the distance the sound has to travel and they way the speaker was designed to work, if i can find that article i'll post it

the gist of the article was having them horizontal isn't going to kill you but you'll get more accurate sound reproduction when oriented vertical

thanks a lot, everyone. i think i'm going to go ahead and place them horizontally, the monitors are strictly for djing so i don't need PERFECT accuracy.

i plan on putting a tv against the wall behind this desk, so having them vertical may be too high and start blocking the tv.

hopefully i can get off my ass and actually start building this desk, i'll post in the pics thread once everything is done!

so if you were just going to put them horizontal anyway, why make the post?

i highly recommend you place them vertical

...but then again, what do i know, i've only been a professional producer for the past 7 years...

I've seen a lot of them placed horizontally in clubs and such. I can't see how it would make much of a difference... just try it.

I suppose some tweeters are more directional in their dispersion than others, but you are so close to them...

the way you posted sounded to me as if the difference was there, just very minimal.

If you are not worrying about creating a perfect soundstage and imaging - which for monitoring you really wont be - then it does not matter what way you have them.

If it was for dedicated listening and for audiophile quality my suggesstion would be to have the tweeters at ear hight, and with the distance between each speaker being the same as the distance between your listening positino and them...

If you really want to get it right then go to a music production site and search for monitor positioning as there is such a thing called the sweet spot.

On the other hand if you intend to play out and you want to give yourself an edge then you might aswell stab one of the cones with a screwdriver, invite a couple of bums in off the street to get drunk and fight and have a family of stray cats live under your decks. The learning cuvre would be steep but boy would you be better than most people when under pressure.

Cheers
Nem
