Read This! Toronto Taxi fares set to rise

if you already think taking a cab in this city is expensive .. get ready..

I just wonder whether they would ever lower the fares if oil prices dropped .. something tells me i highly doubt it

Taxi fares set to rise

CITY HALL BUREAU

New taxi fares approved yesterday by city council will soon raise the price of taking a cab ride in Toronto.

But it will take at least until the end of July before all the cabs in the city have their meters changed and tested, according to one city official.

And Councillor Howard Moscoe, who chairs the city's licensing and standards committee, says the process could take as long as two or three months.

For the transition period, cabs that have had their meters adjusted will be charging the new fares. But if you get in a cab whose owner hasn't yet had the meter adjusted, you'll still pay the current fares.

Council approved the new rates without debate yesterday in order to compensate cabbies for the sharp increase in the price of gasoline.

The new fares will increase the price of a five-kilometre trip by 11.4 per cent, while the price of a 20-kilometre trip will rise 17.5 per cent. The initial drop rate goes up $1, to $4.

The rate per kilometre also increases. Currently, passengers pay 25 cents for every 170 metres the cab travels. Under the new rates, passengers will pay 25 cents for every 155 metres travelled.

*shrug*, while it does suck - it also makes sense. Seems like more and more Taxi's are getting picky with where they are willing to take passengers, and your seeing more simply sitting in 'hot-spots' or for falls to come in and not cruising around as much looking for fares.

Can't really get mad over this one (although slightly annoyed)

agreed.. tho i always thought that initial $3 charge was for their cruising costs. Should they charge it if they're just waiting at a hot-spot.. not sure

And it should! Companies have actually been pretty go so far and haven't really passed the added cost of fuel to the consumer.

Meh, whatever. Taxi's are one of those things that people, no matter what the price, will use because they need* too.

*in some circumstances.

Just wait for the carbon tax!

Taxis are a rip off but not because of the cabbies. Insurance rates are ridiculous as is the over regulation. Also the city plate system that forces some plates to go for 50 grand doesnt help.

Relax the rules and lets see what happens. I bet it would be much more affordable if we took away much of the expensive red tape.

I've had an ongoing interview process with cabbies about meter tampering - an informal survey lets say. I have learned that meter tampering is more common than i thought (although none have admitted they currently tamper - tho many have said they used to). Sometimes the plate owner (their slave master) forces them to tamper the meter.

So in other words i'm sure some of us have already paid a higher price without even knowing it. FYI that little tab that you see on the meter at the bottom right is the "tamper proof seal". If you see no tag it is worth reporting.

In lots of countries it is common to hitch a ride with people (for cash) with a thumbs-up sign (you know, the sort of crap you see in hollywood movies, when the protagonist is leaving for good?)

What's the rule on that in Toronto, anyone know?

Interweb tells me that it's only illegal on 400 series highways. Anyone know otherwise?

I'm guessing we might see more of this in the future...
