Hello all! ^ Excuse that title the internet is wacko here in China

So I'm a Canadian who just found out I got accepted to James Cook University in Cairns! I'm so very excited to say the least

I'm a huge scuba diver and all around outdoor person so Cairns seemed pretty desirable but I'm curious as to the nightclubs there. I googled it and they list the names of the clubs but not the details.

Are there any places there to hear good beats? (house, techno, trance)

dont think there would be many great nights out
might be a few local bars and a rsl or two up there

Seriously, I think you might be a little disapointed in the nightlife.... no really (locals --> )
..but the diving, beaches, and easy access to loads of awesome places (palm cove, port douglas, daintree... capricorn coast is a days driving distance too) just about makes up for it IMO

You'll only be there for a couple of years I'd imagine yeah? Long enough to get sick/annoyed with even some of the best places to live in the world.. but I reckon it'd be a worthwhile experience.

I've been diving over 20 times off Cairns in the past 2 years. Fucking incredible

Thanks! It's for Psychology. I'll be there for at least 4 years...depending on where I want to pursue my Masters after

I've been living in big cities for about 6 years now (Taipei, Toronto, Shanghai, Tokyo) so I'm really looking forward to something smaller and more naturally beautiful. Nightlife wasn't near the top of my list when I chose a place because I've already experienced the big city nightlife and am more interested in other experiences the world has to offer.

I just love you Aussie folks...so excited to be coming there!

I lived in Cairns for 6 months ending in Jan this year and its a pretty sweet place.

First of all there are NO beaches. just thought I would clarify that. You have to go up north a little. Unfortunatly the Cairns Bay was Dredged (see Melbourne Dredging) so that big War ships could get in there for WW2. The beaches are now just Mud Flats. But they have built a nice 'Lagoon' to compensate with a massive big swimming pool and nice grassed and sand areas to sunbake.

Anywho, There are a couple of places to party up there. You would be surprised. As it is a backpacker town there is something to do every night of the week just about.

Soho is probably the only place you will find any trance/electro music. I only went there a few times but remember it was still a good time. Not sure about if you went every Sat for 2 years.

There is also Velvet Underground which is at the Casino. Thats mainly House music and also upstairs at Gilligans is also more House.

There have been some decent DJ's go through there from Time to Time. PVD, Bodyrox, TV Rock went through there late last year. That was a pretty good show cept the organisers need to be shot for their effort. The music made up for it though.
