Best adapted movies
So hundreds of movies have been adapted from novels, mangas, real life events, etc. If you want you can also include remakes.
Which are the best of these, and why?
I consider these two to be among the best, depending on which criteria is applied. The worst are 1:1 adaptations, I feel you should add something valuable in the movie, else there's no point in making it.
Adaptation from Susan Orlean's "The Orchid Thief"
No words can describe how brilliant Charlie Kaufman's script is. There is no way he could have made a movie out of this novel... so he made one about that very process! I'm really impressed by how he managed to merge the book, his own life, and fictional elements into a deep and complex story. Also, Nicholas Cage's performance is stunning.
Shining from Stephen King's "Shining"
The best thing about this is that Stephen King hates it. Kubrick just knows what works in a book, and what works in a movie. He did a brilliant job at exchanging this elements and creating one of the greatest horror film ever. Even the trailer owns most of todays horror by a landslide. Mick Garris later made a TV miniseries, that proved why Kubrick's movie is so great and why a 1:1 adaptations doesn't work.
