Review: James Holden @ Footwork 31.01.09
Got in to FW around 11:45 to find the place warmed up and ready to go. Don't know the name of the opening 2 (3?) DJ's but it was definetly warm up filler, which I didn't mind but also wasn't anything spectacular. Nice to hear the D-Nox & Beckers remix of Drugs N Stuff, solid tune and met my expectations of being 100X better on a club system.
I did leave around 2:45, so my review of Holden is kind of unfair (my ride was leaving ), but from what I heard I will say it was about a 6.5/10. Really up and down in typical Holden fashion, his sets are not programed really well like a true tactician, but rather to just play whatever he thinks sounds good for the moment. I wouldn't say it was a bad set, it definetely had interesting elements to it but I was hoping for more of the insane minimalish melodies that he has provided in some other sets. Maybe he played them after I left, I hope so for the one's who are still on the dancefloor because he really knows how to find hidden gems.
Good to see all the TA's out in force, you know who you are. And also, this was my 3rd time to FW, but I've never seen it this packed. Is it usually like this?
P.S. Anyone who can ID Holden's second tune gets a Rev from me the next event I go to.
