I read the book on which this is based and it doesn't do either one. It really has no slant. Sometimes US soldiers are shown as scumbags, because they do scumbag things like shooting a random civilian in the head as they are driving past him in a column.
Other times, they help people out.
Some characters in the book were beyond redemption though, others were stand-up people.
It is what it is.
