Mixxx 1.6.0 Released (free open source dj software)
Hey guys,
I work on this open source project called Mixxx. It's Free software
(licensed under the GPL) and is a lot of fun. (a "by DJs for DJs" kind
of thing) It's also cross-platform: Linux, Mac, and Windows are supported.
Today we just released a major new version. If you ever tried 1.5.0
and thought it was missing something, then 1.6.0 might have what you
were looking for.
It supports Serato, Traktor Scratch and FinalScratch vinyl control
timecoded cd's and vinyl records, and it supports a whole slew of MIDI
input devices. Also, if you don't have a fancy multiple-input
multiple-output soundcard, you can just use two soundcards, one for
output and one for cueing.
If you do, please let us know what you like and what you don't
like. We're always looking for suggestions. If you have problems you
can try our mailing list, our IRC channel, or our bugtracker.
Also, if you know C++ and want to join in on the fun, it's a
completely open development process -- anyone can join us.
Let me get this strait... all I need are 2 Serato vinyls, and external sound card, and a mixer? Sure beats paying $500 for Serato.

Well, you need two turntables to play the vinyls on, but basically yea.
You hook the turntables up to the inputs of your soundcards (you need
2 inputs). You don't even need a mixer because the mixing is done
in Mixxx. There's a way you can set it up to use an external mixer
though, so if you still want to use your mixer you can.
Adding hardware support for MIDI devices is usually just as simple as
figuring out which MIDI signals go to which button on the device. We
don't own many devices and we don't do this for money at all so it's
hard to add more . We have a 'MIDI Learn' feature coming very soon, so this will become even less of a problem soon.
