New things youve been doing recently.........

that have helped you along in your productions?

Me, using room reverb as opposed to hall/long reverbs on leads to create a different space...
using abletons track delay to shift some of my hat lines etc... making things more groovy!

post a few things youve been doing - maybe we can pick up a few tricks from each other!

Learning my way around FM synthesis using Native Instruments' FM7.

always heard great things about fm7/8 - just looks a bit scary when you try and make your own patches, must give it another go

The easy way to start learning the practical side on FM7 is to turn off all but two of the oscillators on a patch and then start playing around with those to see what it does to the sound and waveform. Then when you've got some idea about how to control that sound, start adding more oscillators and playing around with them as well.

Tweaking lots of little audio samples, getting a better handle on stutter edits, stuff like that. Learning more about laying down high BPM drum loops with lots of snare action and less kick busyness. Also, maybe more importantly; playing single notes on lots of different instruments rather than an epic chord on a single pad sound. Builds up a massive, harmonic sound, since your not limited to what you can reach on a keyboard, or the chord shapes you usually gravitate towards. So my contrary motion and general harmonies have been getting bigger and bigger, while taking up less actual space in the mix.

I've been on vacation and visiting family/friends on the other end of the country, so I haven't been doing anything except drinking beer, sitting on my a$$, and watching some Olympics.

When I get home later this week, I'll be starting to work with an incredible new female vocalist - can't wait!

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.
