As a DJ I strive to keep up with new tunes and create a set that is special for every event and enjoy the challenge of keeping ahead of curve in that way. Anyway, just thought I would get the perspective of some of the members here. I am in no way saying this is true all the time or 'dissing' anyone, I just find it to often be the case, much more than with other genres. Anyone else see what I am saying or am I totally off base here.

LOL, welcome to 2004 bro. Ive said this mad long ago about EDM sets in general. Its the same ole tracks always being played. I think as DJs got more popular, they realize that a particular sound attracts people and to keep that attraction going for them, they give the crowd what they wanna hear. They dont have to go out there and even prove they are better than anybody else or have skill, they give the crowd what they are there for and thats that. Why make ure work harder than it needs to be ? I think thats a reason why most DJs nowadays could give two craps about dropping new tracks every single time in their sets because that extra effort at end of the day doesnt mean much to anybody else, esp the crowd. This isn't the case for every DJ(Carl Cox for ex. since I have rarely heard same track played twice from the man), but most can play same tracks and get away with it and not have it affect their turnout.

thats a bit of a generalization. Not all trance djs play the same sets everywhere they go. The Armins, Tiesto, PVDs, Above and Beyonds may, but thats 'their hook.' Thats why 1000's of people go to see them play. They WANT to hear those djs play the big tracks of the moment. When I first started going out, I was the same way.

Go to a non EDM club and you'll most likely hear the dj playing Top 40 stuff...everyone in the place knows all the songs, they all sing along, get drunk and have a great time. If they wanted to hear new music they've never heard before, they would seek out a different place to party.

same principle...not everyone goes out for the same experience.

Productions is partly responsible for that. Less quality new tracks out there so they are forced to play the same shit over and over. With techno, theres a lot more stuff out there. Same could be said about House as well, although as of late tribal has sort of been redundant and repetitive and even more House DJs are adding tech to their sets, such as Calderone, Deep Dish, DT, etc.

because trance music is just so much more generally appealing to people than most other forms of EDM. The biggest djs in the world are trance djs.

I play techno, tech house, progressive house...all sorts of music..I love it all. Lets be honest though, to the average person, most of that stuff isn't that listenable outside of a club. To many people, trance music is. Its has much more pop appeal.

You bring up Sasha...amazing dj, he is an innovator. I highly doubt the average person on the street would care to listen to the individual tracks he plays / produces outside of a club.

I just went on beatport and searched for Sasha's latest release...its a remix of his track Mongoose. Its a great track, I would play it out at a club for sure. If I was on a road trip for example with some of my non club friends and put that song on, they would roll their eyes and tell me to turn it off. If I played the latest Cosmic Gate track...its a delightfully cheesey vocal (I would not play it out) they would probably be into it. Its poppy, catchy, generally appealing.

So, my point is, how would a techno dj for example, work himself into the predicament that you mentioned A&B or Cosmic Gate are in? They can't. People don't follow techno the way they do trance...for the reasons I mentioned.

The way I see it is that Trance is a very limited genre. How much can you REALLY do with Trance when producing it? Seriously? If you try to do something radical and unique, they will call it House or Progressive or some other shit! So what do you expect?

I totally agree on wanting to hear new material when I go see a sick dj play.

people get into their comfort zone and want to hear that shit. Some people in the PVD review thread were hating on Beautiful Things (or maybe it was AT the rave people were hating on it). But my friends loved it cause they know that song. So it was like, they could actually ID a track, and it feels good.

when im spinning at school I try and put people on to new music but all they want to hear is Lil Wayne and David Guetta. When they finally come back from spring break, they ask me to play music ive been playing for months and months and months. but only after SB do they want it.

its personal preference I guess. I like hearing new music when I go out with a little splash of ill shit that I know. I cant stand Top 40 music, thats why I started DJing at college, so I could control the music in the bar. when people bitch about not hearing the same old shit, I tell them to fuck off IM THE DJ. then I force whatever I want down their throats.
