Yeah XP recognizes 3GB of Ram maximum..
I recommend you try tweaking your machine to improve performance before messing around with hardware upgrades. There are several things you can do to get a free speed boost. Why don't you try disabling some of the programs that load up with Windows every time you reboot to save memory and processing power?
Go to www.ccleaner.com and install the program, then click the "tools" tab on the left side..followed by "startup". You should be able to safely delete everything in your startup menu except your antivirus and firewall. The other stuff just wastes CPU power and memory by loading up when you don't really need it.
Next go here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Read the instructions and use Blackviper's "safe" services configurations. This can save more ram and CPU power. It's easy to do. Just click start, run, then type services.msc in the run box to pull up the menu. I disabled about 15 unnecessary services on my computer.
After you've done this, click the start menu and right click "my computer". Choose properties, advanced, performance settings, and under visual effects tab, choose "adjust for best performance"...then recheck the boxes for drop shadows, themes, and font smoothing. This turns off most of the "eye candy" in XP that you hardly notice anyway..and will save a nice amount of CPU power..leaving it free to focus on your programs.
Finally click run ccleaner again and let it sweep all the temporary and junk files off your computer...then defragment your system. Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter...and defrag your hard drive. Then reboot the machine and defrag again.
Congratulations. Your computer is now PIMPED! It should be quite a bit faster..and you didn't even need to upgrade the hardware
