PC Upgrade Question

To all you tech geeks ive been thinking in upgrading my computer. The need for this is because Im running big programms like AutoCad and so on that require big space and fast processors. Well currently I have Autocad, runs imo great but sometimes it seems that the program lags, is this due to the RAM or to the speed of the PC?

Well currently the configurations of my PC are as follow:

Intel Duo Core 2.2 ghz
2 GB of DDR2 RAM
250 GB HD

I dont know to go ahead and upgrade my RAM to stop some lagging

When it lags, does it stall and seem like its processing information, or is it more like the screen is chugging?

well when its processing information. for example, when im trying to load up lets say a 3d model in the start it lags but after that its fine. its lags when i open up big programs or when im loading up heavy activity work

Does it lag once the CAD file is open? If so; probably RAM

If it just lags opening the file... that's kind of normal... it needs to load stuff off your HD and into your RAM / L2. Run a defrag, your HD is the bottleneck.

Your CPU is fine and you have a decent amount of RAM... shouldn't be a problem. (I don't work with autocad though... just pro-e)

Might also speed up loading if your CAD software and files are on a 2nd HD (not the one your OS is running off). Works for games too

Dont forget XP has an effective RAM limit of about 3gb, if you're using XP

Dude dont tell me that? Well I have XP Pro SP3, so that means If I want to add an extra 2gb to total 4gb it wont run at its full capacity?

Yeah XP recognizes 3GB of Ram maximum..

I recommend you try tweaking your machine to improve performance before messing around with hardware upgrades. There are several things you can do to get a free speed boost. Why don't you try disabling some of the programs that load up with Windows every time you reboot to save memory and processing power?

Go to www.ccleaner.com and install the program, then click the "tools" tab on the left side..followed by "startup". You should be able to safely delete everything in your startup menu except your antivirus and firewall. The other stuff just wastes CPU power and memory by loading up when you don't really need it.

Next go here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Read the instructions and use Blackviper's "safe" services configurations. This can save more ram and CPU power. It's easy to do. Just click start, run, then type services.msc in the run box to pull up the menu. I disabled about 15 unnecessary services on my computer.

After you've done this, click the start menu and right click "my computer". Choose properties, advanced, performance settings, and under visual effects tab, choose "adjust for best performance"...then recheck the boxes for drop shadows, themes, and font smoothing. This turns off most of the "eye candy" in XP that you hardly notice anyway..and will save a nice amount of CPU power..leaving it free to focus on your programs.

Finally click run ccleaner again and let it sweep all the temporary and junk files off your computer...then defragment your system. Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter...and defrag your hard drive. Then reboot the machine and defrag again.

Congratulations. Your computer is now PIMPED! It should be quite a bit faster..and you didn't even need to upgrade the hardware
