Agoraphobes deserve vacations too!

By asking for advice in the COR I am asking for it, but here goes...

In Sept 2006, I booked a hotel to attend WMC 2007 but THEN...

On New Year's Eve 2006, I was on the interstate with an ANGRY friend. We are going to a surprise party for this guy G. (Let me digress a moment...it relates to the story...)Anyway, G. and I were best friend, but I had a secret crush on him. I decided to keep that info in the vault. I had a party and this woman, P. wanted to jump him and asked me if I'd mind. Initially, I said no, but then I said it would bother me- that I liked him. Well, you all can figure out what happened- they hooked up and became a couple for a little while. And there was a lot of tension btw G, P, and I.

The point of this whole digression is that night I was going to a surprise party for G being thrown by his then giflfriend P. I had to suck it up and be a good friend to G & P.

Anyway, my angry friend got lost and so we were driving in the dark up and down the interstate and he was getting madder and madder. I am prone to panic attacks. I started to panic, hit my limit, asked him to pull over, and ended up being driven by ambulance to the hospital. Good thing is I got out of the dreadful party. I rung the new year completely alone in a hospital, which was okay. (They didn't give me any drugs though which pissed me off)

Here is the meat of the story. Since that night I have developed agoraphobia & became afraid to travel on highways and by public transportation. Going to Florida was out. So I cancelled WMC 2007

I haven't had a proper blow out vacation in years and I want one. So I have recovered quite a bit from my condition and could take a train from Philly to Miami.

or maybe I should skip WMC, but I can't think of a similarly cool vacation for someone like me- someone afraid of highway driving, flying, and busses. Pretty much I'm limited to the train and local driving.

Don't people with crippling anxiety disorders deserve to let loose?

I suffer from them, esp agorophobia. I've learned that I have my limits, but am working on pushing them outwards more so, and have learned to enjoy peaceful holidays. It might not be what everyone my age is doing but I have fun. Lots of people don't understand nervous panic attacks & stuff, and i dont think anybody can until they actually have one, but you definitely don't need to shut yourself away because of it. I've learned a lot from that personally.

You know there are coping mechanisms you can learn if you go to a psychologist which usually work for all kind of phobias...right?

Why live with this crutch when you can change it in a short time?

I suggest you go to a learning and behavior specialist.

*edit* i suffer from fear of heights, whatever that is called, but it does not affect my life in any way so no need for treatment. It obviously affects you so you should get it checked out.
