Simple questions about dithering & samplerates

Hello,

Without getting too technical (see Wav or 320 thread for that ), can someone tell me exactly how I should be rendering my files.

For a while, I just rendered at 16bit, 44100hz.

Then I read that its better to go 24bit. So now I render at 24bit, 44100hz. I also make sure that any bouncing down of synths etc is all done at 24bit. I render the file like this, then import the file back into the sequencer. Put a limiter on the master channel which has a dither feature, then render again but this time at 16bit, 44100hz.

But now I've read that its better to go 88200hz. So now I render at 24bit, 88200hz, import back in, limiter with dither, render at 16bit 44100hz.

Is this the best way to go about doing it?

Also, the limiter has differet dither options of 24, 22, 20, 18 and 16bit. Should the dither be set to 24bit as this is what the wav is currently at, or 16bit as this is what the wav will end up being. Both seem to play just fine afterwards but which one should i set it at?

Sorry if these are lame questions, just wanna make sure the wav is ending up as good as it can be.

Thanks in advance

Greg

The industry standard is pretty much 16Bit 44100Khz, thats cd quality. Though this should be good enough, I alway bounce my track as 24bit 44100Hz, I don't see the point yet going higher than 44100Hz.

It's advisable to set the limiter to 24bit aswell, this will increase the quality of the sound (in reference to 16Bit).

As far as I know, dithering is only neccesary when switching bit depths, not when changing sample rates. Assume you know some of this, but just in case:
There is an advantage to using 24 bit when you're planning on doing further processing, but if burning to CD Obviously not. You seem to have this right G-Con. Don't use 48 khz, I'm told (by echosystem) that 88.2 is far better, or you could just stick with 44.1, since I think that this will not result in degadation of quality due to post processing. However, you will want to use 24 bit because it gives you more dynamic detail, which you need given that a track rendered at -6Db is not using its full headroom.
What you set the limiter to will depend on exactly what your setting; if your setting dither on the limiter (ie waves L series) then you'll want to have the bit depth set to the bit depth your rendering to. In your case this is 16. Theran has it right for if your setting your limiters internal resolution, but I've never seen a limiter with an adjustable internal resolution, so its a bit of a moot point.
I should add that ableton now has internal dithering, most DAWs have had this for ages, so you don't neccesarily HAVE to use a plugin dither, but two hits of dither seem to give a more subjectively pleasing sound to me, which is strange - might be complete imagination.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm on Live 6 so no dithering available on that.

So if I understand you right, I should definately render at 24bit but 88200hz is pointless if all I'm doing is importing back in and sticking a limiter on?

And for the final render, I should set the limiter's dither option to 16bit? (I am using Waves L2)
