There's a strange liking for plain tomato pizza in Quebec. When I was a kid, shortly after my folks came off the boat, there was cheap pizza in grocery stores sold in rectangular slabs wrapped in shrink-wrap. All it was was thick bread that's elastic when it comes off your teeth, and pizza sauce. That's it, nothing else.
Over the years, I've begun to see them cut in single serving pieces and shrink-wrapped for sale at depanneurs (convenience stores) by the cash. Like the only way people would buy them is on impulse.... but no, people seem to really like them.
I was in Montreal over the weekend, and I still see them in stores today. To make matters more bizzare, I've seen them there in bulk, as nearly 1 by 2 foot slabs of them stacked a couple of feet high and watched people buy them. Weird. Good thing I had my 2 pounds of unrefrigerated squeeky cheese curds petting my nose with the fresh cheese aroma, and my pushing my 200 lb shopping cart as it was also filled with $20 cases of beer. We're getting so ripped off here.
It sorta looks like this, but with an extremely thin layer of sauce and orange colour crust due to the oil smushed around in the sarad wrap.
