Dunno CROATIAN folks: help needed!!

Hey,

i'm doing a trip through europe in september/october. We're planning to visit Istria in Croatia but i'm kinda stuck as to which city to visit. We will be travelling by train and dont want to take extra taxis or busses to the city we would visit.

I've done some research and it looks like Rejika and Opatija are our best options to get to by train. Or can you guys recommend other/better cities (along the coastline and not too southern; pula for instance is too far, since we're coming from zagreb).

I've heard that Rejika isnt that 'tourist minded'.

I would love to visit a city at the western coast line but it seems like none of those have a railway connection.

COR VERSION: recommend me a city along the coastline in istria that we can visit by train coming from zagreb

Rijeka is more of a port city than a tourist spot.
Opatija is really nice, and while your up there check out Pula..... but screw Istra and go to Dalmatia instead

edit: You said no taxis or buses but check out the island of Krk.

Don't be foolish and limit yourself to no taxi or bus rides over and above the train. That is like going to an airport and asking to fly for free.

We will off course be visiting stuff in the neighbourhood but since we're doing like 9 cities in 22 days, we just dont want to arrive in a city after six train hours or so and still hav to take taxis or busses.

I've heard Pula is really nice but it's simply too southern, we're coming from Zagreb, staying in Istria for a few days and then go to Ljubljana. Goind to Pula would mean an extra 6-7 hours on the train...

Same goes for Dalmatia... probably very beautiful but no time for it...

As it stands now, it looks like it's going to be Opatija. Apparently theres no railway station in Porec or any other cities along the western coast line.

Here's a list of cities/regions we will be visiting:

starting in Bruges to:
Prague
Boedapest
Zagreb
Opatija ?
Ljubljana
Venice
Milan
Côte d'Azur
Lyon
back to Bruges

Ahh well have fun. I refuse to ever do any of those 100 cities in 10 minutes things. I went to Toronto for a week last year and wished I had more time to go to MTL and hang out with a few more people.

When you are ordering beer in Ljubljana make sure you order Laško and not Union, people there might give you an angry look or two since the Union brewery is located in Ljubljana, but there is a reason why we have a saying here that goes "Pijem laško, ščijem Union" which translates to "I'm drinking Laško and pissing Union"

Some general information on where to and how to in Ljubljana check out this site http://www.visitljubljana.si/en/ and if you are there on a weekend, karantanija.com has listed most of the noteworthy events going on at the the time.

I would love to post more on what to do and or where to go, but i don't live there and my work and school take me to the opposite side of the country so i don't spend nearly as much time there as i used to. Though a walk trough the old part of the city and lunch in one of the restaurants near the river was always fun.
