Crysis: Warhead first impressions

Yeah yeah, I know I said I wasn't gonna buy it, but the 29$ price tag made me change my mind, so I cracked and bought a copy today. Played for the last 3 hours or so - granted about 30 minutes of that was toying with graphics settings to get the best performance.

Other than the new campaign, the game doesn't seem to offer much in terms of new content. There are a couple of new vehicles - one of them somesort of heavy APC. I had a lot of fun with that one. The devs seem to have cought on that jumping into a badass tank only to have it destroyed in a matter of seconds was not fun, so this particular vehicle section involved taking lots of hits and blowing tons of shit up, which always makes me happy. The other new vehicle I've seen so far was a shitty hovercraft. It's incredibly unresponsive, goes flying at the slightest provocation, constantly gets stuck under random obstacles (requiring you to load a quicksave), and if that wasn't enough, the camera is constantly shaking in a chaotic, unpredictable fashion, making it next to impossible to see where the fuck you're going with it. Truly this was the worst vehicle section I've ever had the displeasure of going through. Thankfully it didn't last too long.

On top of that you get some new weapons that you'll never use because using a machine-pistol designed for close range in a wide open outdoor area is a dumb idea. When dual-wielded, the only way to fire the offhand pistol is to use right mouse, despite having rebound the fire2 key to something else. This sort of thing makes me wonder if this game was even tested before release. Speaking of bugs, there were also a number of minor glitches (weird animations, frozen corpses, etc), and I also experienced a random crash (something I never experienced running crysis before).

Another thing that greatly annoyed me was how the first person POV short-and-sweet cutscenes of crysis have been replaced by long, bad, cheesy in-game 3rd person cutscenes - which comepletely kills the immersion that made the original so fun.

It's not all bad though. Once you get past all the quirks, the gameplay is a lot of fun. It's definately more fast-paced and action-oriented than Crysis. The graphics look stunning as always, and the overall atmosphere is fantastic. On top of that, I've noticed a significant increase in explosive barrels and fuel tanks, which immediately gave me a massive hard on.

Just finished it now. The last few missons were pretty sweet. Plus I got an excuse to use my robocop pistol for a good 20 minutes, so I'll have to retract that statement I made earlier about it being useless. Sure it could've been better as an expansion pack, and it could've used some more polish before release, but overall I am satisfied. My expectations weren't all that high to begin with.

It's still lush and green for most of the game. The story takes place parallel to crysis, and even after the alien ship generates the sphere, most of the missions actually take place on the outside where it's still jungleish.

Bottom line is - if you enjoyed crysis and want some more of it, here it is. It's nothing extravagant, no innovative changes, just more crysis. If, on the other hand, crysis didn't impress you, this won't either.

I hear multiplayer in Warhead is much better than the original. The single player campaign is short but multiplayer is where you get your $$ worth.

P.S. for those who want it, Circuit City has the game for $25 shipped right now.

The one reason I won't buy this:

Just from the trailers, the fucking worst voice acting ever. Crysis may have been a little cheesy, but I didn't mind... I still loved the story. Somethings telling me crysis warhead will seriously piss me off though.

Sounds great actually. I haven't been gaming for years so I'm not ultra sensitive to more of the same (funnily enough the, when something is unique... its allmost allways certainly better also). Even still, the "Over here sarge" type voice acting/script will seriously piss me off if I decide to buy it.

I didn't notice the voice acting being any crappier than crysis, and I'm usually pretty picky about this stuff. The trailer sounded weird because it was botched from a bunch of random quotes put together randomly.

Yeah it's not stellar, but it's not a story-driven game like an RPG, the plot only serves to keep the action going foward. The game is still fun despite that.

Just finished it yesterday, I had a lot of fun with it and I know there are quite a few missions I want to retry. Mostly those where your in a vehicule or following one, which I would retry all on foot. And the last mission gives so many options.

Also the new automatic pistols are pretty nice actually and make the game harder, since I was playing mostly without cloaking and using more speed and strenght.

As for the lenght of the game, it was good enough, especially if you play it on Delta since you'll die more often and you wont be able to just rush through.

I didnt really mind the aliens in crysis but I tought they were alot better in warhead, putting up quite a fight at some points where they keep shooting you from far enough away and are hard to reach with grenades, etc.

And I loved the folliage when walking around in the forest, which was much fuller and looked great with light coming in.
