I don't hear a lot of chatter on here about deep house, or the low-tempo stuff floating around right now, so I thought I'd put some feelers out to see who else is feeling this stuff.
There are a bunch of locals pumping out some sexy deeper gr00ves that I think really deserve some attention. I haven't paid attention to too many internationals, though I do have a link or two worth mentioning.
First and foremost would be irGO with his podcasts:
This guy has been pushing his 'opening' sets for a while now, and really pumping some "deep house nuggets" in his podcasts. Some DEFINITE sexy rhythms, especially with the last set he did for Footwork's Steph Philion's bday. I'd call irGO Toronto's deep house champion right now--he's hitting every deep house nail right on the head. Now if only he'd produce some deep house for us all to enjoy...
Internationally, I've been following Deeper Shades of House, Lars Benrenroth (host). Talk about one hell of a name. His stuff is sic, I listen to his podcasts religiously. My deep house podcast bible:
Another player in our local scene that I think has been a sneak attack in the deep house category is Basement's own DJ Rudee.
The more I listen to this guy's mixing (FLAWLESS mixing), the more I enjoy the down-tempo heavy beats of his sets. It was with a startling realization a few weeks ago that I came to the conclusion that he was integrating a significant amount of deep house into his sets. This might attribute to some of the flack for down-tempo sets at basement on Sundays mornings (which I hear are, unfortunately, no more, booo).. but from a deep house perspective, this stuff is sweet.
Dj Rudee vs. Kenny Glasgow really gives a good feel for some "higher energy deep house" I think, and well worth the listen to any deep-house curious person:
(I hear Kenny Glasgow and Addy (and Rudee) are at Basement for the May 18th long weekend party? What! What!)
I'm loving what Cam Maxwell is doing with deep house too in his legendary Acid Lounge 7 hour sets, but I don't have an audio sample. I'll have to lift the restraining order for a bit to request he record some shiznit for us deep-house-heads.
JennyPie pointed me towards PQM (Pretty Quick Mix) who does some BRILLIANT things with some soulful vocal deep house mixes. People, if there is one deep house dj you should check out, it's PQM, the PQM Project:
I HAVE to post the track listing so you can see just how many of these tracks this guy personally mixed up. It's absolutely brilliant:
1. The Way The PQM Project Abducted Recordings *
2. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - The PQM Project Abducted Recordings
3. Room Of A Million Rainbows (PQM Remix) The Timewriter Plastic City +
4. Guitaras The PQM Project Abducted Recordings **
5. Mellow - The PQM Project Abducted Recordings
6. Ill Be Your Friend (PQM vs. Roland Klinkenberg Pass) Robert Owens White Label ***
7. Shit Just Stays The Same -The PQM Project feat. Chronik Abducted
8. Love Of The Hour - The PQM Project Abducted Recordings
9. They Just Wont Let Me Be (PQM Rmx)-The PQM Project & Phil KAbducted
10. Everlong (PQM & Vance Musgrove Remix) Foo Fighters White Label +
11. Feel The Rush - The PQM Project feat. Chronik Abducted Recordings
12. Blue Sky Mine (PQM Remix) Midnight Oil White Label**
13. Harrowdown Hill (PQM Remix) Thom Yorke White Label *
(nice advertising)
Lastly, deep house can't be talked about without discussing the legendary Martinez Brothers, and their mentor, Dennis Ferrer.
Heard these kids at Revival on College and they ROCKED the place. If you think that Deep House is totally chill out, you are sadly mistaken. Take a peek:
Would a deep house pre-drink party work on College St. on a Friday or Saturday night? If someone throws one, I'm in.
