Camera Settings Help!

I'd like to be able to take good nighttime pictures and capture the lights etc

such as this

As it is, mine usually turn out like this

(note the squiggly lines, thats my biggest annoyance with it )

Any tips on shutter speed/setup for my camera (sony dsc-p93a) with 3x optical zoom. thanks

You need to turn up your ISO settings, put the camera on night mode, turn off flash. Put the exposure level up. Those should help, also need very very good hands that dont shake...

Just make sure that the camera sits as still as possible. Long exposure time, no flash and a tripod and you're set. And since you're using long exposure time anyway dont use a high ISO setting.

If it makes you feel better my Sony DSC W-1 is rubbish in night mode. It just leaves the shutter open much longer with a tendency to cause blurry photos. It does make for some very cool pictures taken from planes though!

Tripod is key for stable shots like that.

A tripod is all you need. I've taken tons of night pix with those results. If you have no tripid, find a place to rest it stable, and use something to prop it up for a desired angle.

Click, and the shutter will open by itself for as long as it finds it necessary. Fine tune the next shots with ISO and all that what others have said. Voila.
