converting sets from WAV to mp3

greeting fellow deejhays..
ok so far when I record it is set as a WAV file on my computer, and as you can imagine that takes up a substantial amount of space after a while. Can anyone help me find a way of getting a program to convert to mp3 as to make the file smaller? And also, if i was to do this, how much would this affect the sound quality, would it be noticeable?
cheers in advance,
L

Any program will do as long as it uses LAME.

The answer is: don't, I mean, its definitely something lost, and you'll never be able to get it back if you delete the original wav. If you wanna save space but not lose any data try encoding it in flac, you get file sizes 30% smaller but mathematically lossless (so convert it back and its the exact same thing).

320 kbps is more than acceptable to the majority of people.

If I was you I'd at least burn the WAV on to a CD, though.
