the grammys are a massive record industry circle jerk. it's not only a celebration of what's marketed and distributed most effectively to the lowest common denominator, but it is in itself a gigantic product promotion. when it does recognize true talent, it's often by coincidence.

I personally could care less about the Grammy's, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. There is a lot of fantastic music that goes under the radar. Like Rich says, it's just a giant promotional tool to sell more records than anything else. Same reason why they only bother to showcase popular styles of music on TV.

Oscars are a little bit different though. It takes enormous resources to create a good movie. Anyone can make a good track because of the technology that's available for cheap, but not everyone can make a great movie, just based on how much money and manpower it actually takes to pull it off. Those home movies people make just aren't quite going to cut it.

+1 one the Grammys, it's simply about marketing and unit sales.

However, I don't want to burst your collective bubble about the Oscars, but seriously, it's all about connections, not a great films. So many outstanding films miss even Oscar nominations while other big budget slabs of worthless junk win oscars simply because of the producer/directors ability to secure votes.

Sometimes truly worthy films and people do win, and it's great when they get the recognition but so many best actor and best film Oscars just go to the one who has the most powerful agent, or which studio really needs their film to be a hit (cases in point Chicago, Cold Mountain, and guess what, they were both weinstein movies....).

You have to realize there is a whole Oscar lobbying industry that has grown - if a film wins an oscar, it's worth in excess of $100 to the studio in terms of future sales of that film or star and several million to the agents too.

The Oscars are amazing as a spectacle, but not that real in terms of awards.

You probably have a really good point there, the Oscars are probably just as crooked, if not more crooked, than the Grammy's. However, in most cases, just as a personal observation, the Best Picture winner usually deserves it. There have been a few hits and misses but in general, but the ones that do win, always turn out to be exceptional films.

Albeit all points are good, IMO, there is a need for these "contests" so to speak.

Indeed, some people have used the system to their own advantage by going around the spirit of the awards.

If its a bunch of media or writers deciding whats the best film to watch or music to listen to, then indeed there might be some bias that can come about.

But something like a real widespread and mass consumer contest is actually a good way that provides structure to the industry and allows a base to who is most popular to the end user.

In a parallel world where everybody is a DJ, Obama is the guy who just won Best DJ and was voted the most number of times by the consumers. There will always be other people that think McCain is better. There will be some purists that Bush is still the best DJ. Music is a preference and to each his own. As such, there will always be others who think Obama is not so good at all, and Palin is so much better.

But at the end of the day, Obama won and there is a reason for that. We just have to give respect to the majority (if indeed the contest and voting was legit), acknowledge that this DJ moves more people than others (i.e. Tiesto who I dont like), then get to our own cars and listen to what we like (I personally like listening to QUIVVER, who is spinning on Friday Dec 5 @King King).

Just my two cents worth.
