How do you guys cue/mix with the headphones?

Are both tracks playing in the cans when you're making the transition, or just the incoming track?

Split cue?

I've noticed a lot of the bigger names never take their headphones off, yet I take them off when I'm making a transition. Is this a bad habit or does it not matter?

Sorry if this has been discussed before...just eager to learn!

Often when you play out the sound in the club can sound completely messed up from the Dj booth therefore it's easier for the dj's to leave the headphones on to hear their mix properly.

I personally Have both song playing through and usually will only have one ear on.

With my xone 92 and the 'add mix' knob i can now control how much of the song that's playing out is added to my cue'd track that i'm listening to.

Absolutely love this feature as i can turn the volume right down on my cans and still hear the cue'd track and the one playing out.

I find split cue doesn't work well for me, I practice using it every now and again in case it's all a mixer has in front of me if i every play somewhere

Whatever works for you.

I use both headphone and monitor, though not both at same time. My brain can't concentrate with one ear tuned to headphone and one to monitor.

You will get stuck in clubs with shitty monitors (or none at all!) so being able to mix with just headphone IMO should be practiced.

I only really use my headphones because of how my mixer lets me listen to both the cued tracks and the master out at the same time so I just find that easier. sometimes I practice using split cue like someone else above said in case I come across a mixer that doesn't let me do that but for the most of the time (90%+) I only use headphones.

The previous advise about why pro dj's leave their cans on during sets is spot on, good advise.
I have both tunes playing in my cans initially, till pretty much mixed, then redo the cueing etc, mix it again, but with 1 can on, the other listening to the monitor, to make sure im happy. Always a good idea to ensure what your hearing is the same as the crowd, dont wanna be seen dancing in the dj box oblivious to the fact that no-one else can actually hear anything, or my mixings out...lol

My mate does this quite often when he's messing around on my decks. Has cans on and doesn't know what's going on when everyone's just staring at him

We just rip it out of him then! Always check once in a while.

You should learn to mix with no headphones. Can be done using level meters. I have to for now when at home coz the input jack on my mixer got destroyed by my ex. Can't afford to get it fixed at the mo either.
It's actually good training for your ears and will really help you if happen to forget headphones one night or some other similar situation occurs.
