Which would you rather? Financial wealth or social wealth?

I am asking myself this question more and more these days, and the prospect of helping to create, and living in, a society where everyone works together for an improved quality of life seems to be the path I want.

Being a millionaire or billionaire doesn't really appeal to me, whether it's in this current society or even in the more social society. Does anyone else on this planet feel the way I do?

I would rather be able to buy cheap and healthy food when needed; I'd rather have plenty of friends to socialize with, to learn from, and to teach; I'd rather a live a life creating and sharing all forms of Art and being involved in bringing visions to life (mine or others). Wouldn't it be better to live in a community where people fucking care about you? Where strangers aren't seen as mysterious and malevolent monsters out to hurt you? Where paranoia, conformity, and ignorance are no longer the norm?

If I had a trillion dollars (!) I'd trade it all in just to be a fucking poor man in that society.

What's your position?

good thread / topic.

ive had this talk with a friend of mine before, and he took the financial wealth the reason why "money can buy happiness" trumps all card. which i disagree with, sure you can buy material things but you will always be lonely and that will be terrible. no money can buy an artificial relationship. you can buy shit and live in a mansion but youll have close to nobody to connect with. which would seem boring to me.

food for though, conversely that agruement can be aimed at the social side of things. most friendships do not last just as material things would be so essentially they are both equal. you can buy things and they go boring after awhile and likewise, have a good friend and then uh oh, friendship dies like most do. it is rare / you have a select number of people you are really close with. most of the people you know are acquaintances to which you may never seen again. if your a social fiend (im interpreting your social wealth as # of people you know) it won't mean shit eventually. quick fixes but you won't be truly satisfied. anyone here knows the difference between having someone really close and acquaintances, they are not comparable at all.

but hey, some people dont give two fucks about people. take the money and buy those fake relationships, bribe people. maybe it would be the realistic thing to take the money and be worry free (most of our worries are financial related anyways) and keep on trucking with your 3 good friend who knows.

above all this mindless drivel. i agree with your viewpoint. social over money anytime. human interaction beats material worth anytime imo.

I would rather have tons of money to crush all those that opposed me in a blaze of glory.

Financial wealth mixed with social wealth. The best of both worlds!

why can't you have tons of money AND great relationships at the same time? That is what I would like.... to be filthy rich and maintain the already great relationships I've forged through my life.

I just don't want to be the rich guy. I want to make just as much money as the people around me. We look at richness as the end all and be all of power, and I don't think that's so.

I'm not even advocating communism or anything, because I think that anyone who feels that they need to have excessive luxury should be able to have it if they obtain it in an ethical manner.

I agree with this. Having money doesn't mean you have to spend it recklessly any chance you get. There's beings generous, and then just showing off. I rather have financial wealth, the rest comes easier when you don't have to worry about bills.

Actually, that's quite funny, because as I am getting older, I start to think more about going Green and being ethical and responsible with the privileges I did not earn.

Ugh.... am I going to turn into one of those guys? I guess you really can't help how you are. I never would have thought I'd be like this when I was younger.

You're both thinking in the context of current society, as in, what if you were given a billion dollars right now. I am talking about a society that will exist years from now.

To better explain: If I were given a million dollars today, of course I'd be happy and I'd accept it. If I were given it years from now, I would gladly turn it down because it would be useless to me. My life and our society would be improved to such an extent that I wouldn't need a million dollars.

Hope that made things clear.

Re: Re: Re: Which would you rather? Financial wealth or social wealth?

I pretty much don't need nor want a ton of money. I was quite happy with the pay of my previous job. 40k/yr was good to me. I was able to do what I wanted most of the time and I could afford to travel. I had made some bad financial decisions and was taking care of them (still am a little bit) but I was fine otherwise. I really want to be where I was pay wise or maybe a few thousand a year more, and I would be happy.
