having played on both the empath (linear) and djm-800, i'd say the djm is an over-priced joke of a mixer
the sound is crap, especially compared to the A&H, and the effects are blah unless in the hands of a geek that has devoted their life to mastering them and really, unless you're planning on using it coupled with the digital coax, not worth your time and money to upgrade from the djm-600
my next mixer purchase is going to be in the form of an A&H xone 92 rotary or korg zero 8, although the ecler evo 5 has gotten my attention, i just haven't had the chance to play on it yet
btw, i USED to be a pioneer whore through and through
CDJs, pioneer all the way, but the djm-800, it works well, not worth the price
edit: you get these "top djs" putting it on their riders because it's convenient and easily accessible, also it's familiar, having played on the different xones and heard what they can add to a proper sound system, it's like night and day
vive le analog sound!

Hmm, why do you really care what's on their riders? If you're really throwing events that huge, just rent whatever you need for the show. The costs is miniscule in the scheme of things.
As for the above mentioned mixer, the Empath is awesome. And mixing on a Rane rotary is always a good feeling.

Just an FYI Tony, the Korg Zero line has been discontinued apparently!
