Just curious cause I'm not ready to get my material signed, IF I wanted to do a vocal, whats the typical route thats taken? how much collaboration goes on... just send them a semi-finished instrumental track and let them take off on the vocal?

In all my years producing this is also something I have wondered about.

yeah i think most of the time you pretty much finish the track, then send the track to a vocal agent type of guy, who will hook you up with an artist and figure out the vocals

i know this dutch agent who handles heaps of big trance vocalists, was pointed to his myspace a while ago, but i've forgotten it now
the guy's just like an agent for vocals though, just like gets them vocalist gigs for trance tunes pretty much, and either writes it, or gets someone else to...

this is how it normally works, of course there's some people who would write their own, and even record there own

Yeah, it really depends on the vocalist and your method of collaboration (e.g., who is doing the recording?). I work with a lot of singers (currently working with four) and generally come up with a melody idea and have them write the lyrics. So, I'll send them an mp3 of the song with a piano playing the part that I want them to sing. I allow/encourage them to change up the melody to fit whatever works with their lyrics. I also rely on them to let me know if there are any problems with the range, difficult intervals, etc. and we just get iterative with it until it works. Then, we get together and record the vox in my studio. We try to get everything down during one recording session, but often it takes another session or two to get things the way we want.

Thanks, good to know . I'm sure I won't be seriously interested in vocalists for a while to come, but I've started a track that I might be willing to add a vocal to in the future.

And on vocal sampling... For kicks and giggles through in an undeciferable part of a Marcie acapella (reversed and w/ reverb) into one of my tunes. Came out really nice... any kosher way of keeping this in the tune?

In my experience it's a good idea to hook up with various vocalist to try to establish a good working rapport.

One singer I know has really got a good ear for lyrics when she hears a melody, so I give her the track and she pens something to go with it and even sometimes records it as the vocal track and get it to sit perfectly, effect it etc. Works really well, especially when you both understand each other. you can then adapt the actually track if necesary to fit the vocal of other ideas come about too.

You are giving half the rights away (or at least spitting the money but then they are writing half the track.

I know a lot of the Maria Naylor classics were done this way.

At work, when we use vocalists (or studio musicians for that matter) the material is usually already written, but there have been the more organic session where the talent (vocalist) is given free reign and can just play about until something is developed in terms of of performance to fit the track.
