howdy guys, another question for you all

i am in the process of setting up a studio for the 3rd time, lol finnancial reasons complicated things in the past.

and when i started out i got a TI keyboard etc and novation etc etc. however this time i was thinking what if i get a really good full sized midi keyboard with weighted keys. As i think i will one day wish to expand my hardware, so racks would be in my best interest i would think.

What do you think any suggestions most appreciated. and any ideas on a great midi keyboard would also be appreciated and of course a suitable interface, perhaps motu with a bucket load of ins/outs etc

what are the advantages and disadvantages of doing it this way.

a lot of people use that set up! it saves money and space.

the novation remote SL was probably my favorite controller that i've owned (and i owned a lot!)... great keys, aftertouch and a lot of mapping devices

ah ok, so its important it has the functions for mapping with regards to the midi board.

any yeah agree cheaper and space effective..! sounds good.

is it hard to assign functionality of the rack to the midi keyboard, and how is this done putting it simply, is the assiging done through the comp program or the midi consigns with the rack and its set up that way, if that makes sense.

The signals are sent from the keyboard, through your DAW to the rack.

Your MIDI controller keyboard goes into the MIDI in.

Then your MIDI out/s go to your rack - some interfaces have multiple MIDI outs, or you could send the output into an 1 IN, 8 OUT MIDI unit to connect all the equipment in your rack. Or you could daisy chain the MIDI from one unit to the next (but then you'd need to turn on every single unit if you want to use the last unit in the chain - the signal won't go through if a unit is turned off. Some units also play havoc with MIDI signals going through them, but usually there aren't any problems).

Then in your DAW you assign the MIDI channels being sent out and arm them to respond to the MIDI input from your controller. So you could control a few devices at the same time if you want.

The devices then need to come into your audio interface - depending how many units you have, maybe get an interface with 8 channels or more.

I'm gonna use this thread to ask my question instead of starting a new one. Anyway, nowadays I know that most MIDI keyboards have a USB option available. Now, am I right in thinking that MIDI data goes down the USB cable just as it would with a MIDI cable? Also if I want to setup a MIDI keyboard, all I do is use a USB and an audio cable into my Audio Interface, right? Any help would be greatly appreciated

This depends on whether or not your keyboard is a MIDI controller (keyboard with no sounds), or an actual hardware synth with a keyboard that you are going to use as a controller. If its just a MIDI controller keyboard, then all you need to do is connect the USB cable, there will be no audio out. If it is a hardware synth with a keyboard you are going to use as a controller keyboard then you'd need to connect the USB and the audio outs to your audio interface.
