Peter Leary, of Seagrass, was left with an unpaid bill of $520 when a group of five young diners did a runner on his high-end restaurant in Southbank last week.
The group grazed their way through the restaurant's fine food and wine but after ordering dessert they slipped out "for a smoko" and never returned, the Herald Sun reports.
Leary wasn't going to let the crooked customers get away with it, so he turned to the wonders of online social networking to track them down.
Remembering that one of the diners asked about a waitress at Seagrass who was not working that night, Leary approached his own employee and obtained the diner's name.
"I searched the name [on Facebook] and there he was, large as life," Leary was quoted by the Herald Sun as saying.
"And he was pictured with his girlfriend — the only girl who had been in the group."
Facebook also supplied Leary with the ringleader's place of employment, which turned out to be another Southbank restaurant where his girlfriend also worked.
Leary stormed down to the restaurant and confronted its owner.
Within hours the restaurant manager arrived at Seagrass with the ringleader, who promptly paid the bill along with a generous tip.
The manager later called to tell Leary both employees were now fired.
